Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. - Despite a pair of rallies in the eighth and ninth innings, the Pawtucket Red Sox could not overtake the Durham Bulls in a 1-0 loss on a windy Sunday afternoon at McCoy Stadium.
After falling 3-0 to Durham (69-54) on Saturday night, the PawSox (59-65) were limited to four hits against the Bulls in the finale of the four-game set Sunday. Durham scored the game's only run in the top of the fifth inning and hung on to split the series, though the PawSox threatened in the eighth (runners at the corners with one out) and ninth (man at second with one out).
For the second straight game, Pawtucket second baseman Mike Miller piloted the offense with another multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3. Over his last 33 games dating back to June 29, the 28-year-old from California is hitting a league-best .376 - just ahead of White Sox uberprospect Eloy Jiménez and teammate Rusney Castillo.
Pawtucket starter Justin Haley (L, 5-8) piled up eight strikeouts over 5.2 innings of one-run ball in which he only walked one and gave up four hits. Haley, who was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday and pushed back to Sunday, retired the first 11 batters of the ballgame. On his normal start day, right-hander Mike Shawaryn piggy-backed Haley and fired 3.1 hitless innings with five strikeouts and 12 swinging strikes (of his 54 pitches). After spinning a seven-inning shutout as part of Tuesday's doubleheader, Shawaryn has now logged 10.1 scoreless innings in his last two appearances with only two hits and three walks to go along with 11 strikeouts.
On a bullpen day, Durham starter Austin Pruitt tossed four shutout innings and only ceded one hit. Sidewinding lefty Hoby Milner (W, 1-0) struck out two in a scoreless stanza, and Jaime Schultz (S, 2) helped secure the victory.
Durham started the scoring in the top of the fifth inning when right fielder Jason Coats clanged a solo homer off the left-field foul pole to make it 1-0.
In the eighth, the PawSox put runners at the corners with one out, but Durham reliever Andrew Kittredge generated a pop-out to first and flyout to left.
An inning later, Castillo singled with one out and stole second. Designated hitter Sam Travis drilled a sharp flyball to right-center field, but 15-MPH winds didn't help his case on the flyout. Shultz then recorded the final out.
Following the homestand and a scheduled off day Monday, the PawSox kick off a four-game series in Rochester on Tuesday at 5:05 p.m. when they conclude a suspended game from early July and play a seven-inning game afterward. Pawtucket right-hander Chandler Shepherd (6-8, 3.99) will work in the suspended game that begins in the bottom of the first inning, then left-hander Josh D. Smith will start the nightcap. Rochester is scheduled to throw rehabbing right-hander Michael Pineda in the first game. Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 4:35 p.m.
After the eight-game road trip, the PawSox are back home August 28-30 (Tuesday-Thursday) for the penultimate homestand of the season. Good tickets are available, and fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games. Fans can also call (401) 724-7300 or log on to PawSox.com for tickets.
