Chiefs Score Five After Seventh for 5-3 Comeback Win in Columbus

Columbus, OH - The Syracuse Chiefs came from behind for the second night in a row, overcoming a 2-0 deficit in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Columbus Clippers, 5-3, in ten innings on Sunday evening at Huntington Park. José Marmolejos had four RBIs, including three in the tenth for the Chiefs en route to the victory. This is Syracuse's 14th win since July 27th, and seven of those wins have been in comeback fashion.

Syracuse (55-71) took its first lead of the game in the top of the tenth inning off Columbus relief pitcher Cole Sulser. With the game tied, 2-2, after nine innings, the Chiefs began the tenth with Bengie Gonzalez at second base, per the new extra-innings rule implemented before the start of this season. Victor Robles led off with a single to right field, moving Gonzalez up to third base. Sulser then hit Andrew Stevenson with a pitch to load the bases. After a pop out, Marmolejos cleared the bases with a double to right-center field, scoring Gonzalez, Robles, and Stevenson to put Syracuse in front, 5-2. It mirrored Marmolejos' game-winning three-run bases clearing double in the ninth inning on Saturday night.

The Chiefs closed the game out in the bottom of the tenth. Columbus started the frame with Rob Brantly at second base. Brantly tagged up and moved to third base on an Oscar Mercado fly out to right field. Brandon Barnes followed with a single to center field, scoring Brantly to trim the Syracuse lead to two, 5-3. Syracuse turned to Carlos Torres out of the bullpen at that point in relief of Derek Self, and Torres got Connor Marabell to ground into a double play to end the game.

Columbus (67-59) scored first in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Brantly was hit by a Brady Dragmire pitch. Mercado followed with a double to left field, scoring Brantly for a 1-0 Clippers lead. On the play, Mercado moved to third on a throw home. Brandon Barnes then grounded out to second base, but Mercado scored to give Columbus a 2-0 advantage.

Those were the only runs allowed by Dragmire in seven innings on the mound. The right-hander allowed six hits, two walks, and struck out four batters. Syracuse reliever Derek Self pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings and allowed only an unearned run in the tenth in his Chiefs season debut.

Syracuse scored its first runs in the top of the eighth. Gonzalez led off with a double. Two batters later, Stevenson singled, putting runners on first and third base. Two batters after that, with two outs, Marmolejos singled to center field, advancing Stevenson to third and scoring Gonzalez to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. Moisés Sierra followed with an infield single, that brought home Stevenson to tie the game, 2-2.

The Chiefs have an off day on Monday before beginning a weeklong homestand on Tuesday night with the start of three-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. RHP Phillips Valdez is scheduled to throw for Syracuse opposite RHP Drew Anderson for Lehigh Valley. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
