PawSox Take Opener; RailRiders Strike Late to Split Twinbill

(Moosic, PA) - Pawtucket's Eddie Rodriguez pitched a three-hitter to earn a complete game victory in the opener but then Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored four two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth in the nightcap as the PawSox and RailRiders split a doubleheader Saturday at PNC Field. Pawtucket won the opener 4-1 and Scranton took game two by a score of 7-4.

Rodriguez (2-0) was brilliant in game one, facing the minimum of 15 batters through five scoreless innings. He allowed a run on two hits in the sixth but finished the complete game by retiring Scranton in order in the seventh including two strikeouts. He punched out seven in the game and did not walk a batter.

In game two, Pawtucket erased a late 3-0 deficit by scoring three times in the top of the sixth on bases loaded walks by Travis Shaw and Luke Montz and a wild pitch uncorked by reliever Nick Rumbelow (2-0). The RailRiders came back in the bottom of the inning against Pawtucket hurler Zeke Spruill (2-1) with four runs on five hits.

Spruill allowed four consecutive two-out singles, with Austin Romine's breaking the 3-3 tie and two batters later Nick Noonan's RBI single doubling the Scranton lead. Slade Heathcott then capped the rally with a two-run single to left that made the score 7-3.

Jackie Bradley Jr. drilled an RBI double with two outs in the top of the seventh against Rumbelow, but Blake Swihart struck out to end the game.

Noe Ramirez had made a spot start for Pawtucket, filling in for the scheduled hurler Matt Barnes who was promoted to Boston immediately before the game. Ramirez allowed three runs in three innings, all driven in by Scranton second-baseman Rob Refsnyder. He collected an RBI single in the first and then a two-run double in the sixth.

In game one PawSox catcher Humberto Quintero drove home two of the team's four runs against RailRiders starter Bryan Mitchell (1-2). His RBI single in the fifth put the visitors ahead 2-0, then Quintero's sacrifice fly in the seventh capped a two-run rally that put Pawtucket in front 4-1. Deven Marrero's RBI double was the lone hit of that rally.

Mitchell, like his counterpart Rodriguez, allowed just three hits in a complete-game effort. Only one of the PawSox four runs was earned because of five errors charged to Scranton in the contest, two of which were against Refsnyder at second base.

The teams will conclude the four-game series on Sunday afternoon, as Pawtucket tries to take three of four with first pitch at 1:05pm. PawSox right-hander Keith Couch (1-2, 3.94) will get the start against lefty Matt Tracy (NR). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 12:50 pm.
