Syracuse Mets News Release

Rochester, NY (April 25, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, split a doubleheader against the Rochester Red Wings Saturday afternoon at Frontier Field. Syracuse took game one 5-4 in come-from-behind fashion, and dropped game two 5-2.

In game one, Rochester (8-7) struck first with a run in the second inning. Chiefs starter Scott McGregor surrendered three straight singles to Reynaldo Rodriguez, Danny Ortiz, and Jose Martinez, which plated the game's first run.

Syracuse (6-10) squared the score in the third. The Chiefs loaded the bases off Mark Hamburger on a Michael Taylor single and walks to Ian Stewart and Kila Ka'aihue. Hamburger then walked Jason Martinson to force in the game-tying run.

Rochester was quick to answer. In the fourth, Ortiz homered to deep right field, a two-run shot, which gave the Wings a 3-1 lead. Rochester once again sprung together three straight singles after the home run, with hits from Martinez, James Beresford and Doug Bernier to load the bases. Aaron Hicks then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Martinez and give the Red Wings a 4-1 edge.

The Chiefs rallied in the sixth inning. Ka'aihue started the inning with a single. Two batters later, Matt den Dekker hit a pop up right behind the mound which fell to the turf for an infield single, putting runners on first and second. Rochester manager Mike Quade would then go to the bullpen for each of the next three hitters. A.J. Achter walked Cutter Dykstra to load the bases, and Ryan O'Rourke struck out Steve Lerud for the second out, before Quade turned to closer Michael Tonkin. The right-hander allowed a two-run single to Michael Taylor to bring the Chiefs within one. Tony Gwynn, Jr. then singled to center field, bringing in Dykstra to tie the score. Ian Stewart followed with a ground-ball single that bounced off Tonkin's glove, allowing Taylor to score and give the Chiefs their first lead.

Right-hander Evan Meek pitched the final one and one-third innings of the game and walked two, but retired Eric Farris on a game-ending groundout to second with a runner on third base. He's now saved 23 consecutive chances in Triple-A.

In game two, the Red Wings got on the board first once again. Hicks singled off right-handed starter Bruce Billings and moved to second on a single by Bernier. Eddie Rosario next bounced into a double play, but Hicks moved to third. He scored on a single by Rodriguez for the game's first tally.

In the third, Argenis Diaz was hit by a pitch to start the inning and reached second on a wild pitch. He scored on an RBI single by Bernier to give Rochester a 2-0 lead.

The Red Wings broke the game open in the third. Ortiz doubled to start the inning. Billings then walked Eric Fryer, and Nate Hanson reached on an error by the shortstop Martinson. With the bases loaded, Farris was hit by a pitch to force in Rochester's third run. Diaz then singled home a fourth run, over the pulled-in infield. Billings was relieved by Mitch Lively, who walked Hicks to force in a fifth run before getting out of the frame.

The five runs were enough behind a brilliant spot-start from Lester Oliveros. The right-hander allowed just one hit in four innings and struck out nine of the 13 Chiefs he faced. Syracuse did mount a rally in the seventh. Ka'aihue and Martinson walked back-to-back to start the inning off Ryan Pressly. Two batters later, Dan Butler drove in Ka'aihue on a sacrifice fly to get the Chiefs on the board. A batter later, Jose Lozada singled in den Dekker for the final run of the game.

The Chiefs and Red Wings play the finale of this three game set tomorrow at Frontier Field. Taylor Jordan is slated to start for Syracuse opposite Pat Dean for Rochester. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35.
