PawSox Place Brandon Workman on DL

Brandon Workman has been placed on the seven-day disabled list with a right elbow strain, the Pawtucket Red Sox announced Saturday night. Lefty Robby Scott was recalled from Double-A Portland to replace Workman on the PawSox roster.
A preseason favorite to open the season in Boston, Workman struggled early in spring training but came on strong late, putting himself back in the conversation for a call-up in the event of a need. He did not pitch in either of the first two PawSox games of the season.
Workman made a permanent transition to the bullpen this spring after posting a 5.36 ERA in 15 starts for the Red Sox last season. He has a 6.07 ERA in 21 regular-season relief appearances in his big-league career, but he's best known for the seven relief appearances he made without being charged with an earned run in the 2013 postseason.
Scott, an undrafted pitcher who the Red Sox signed away from the independent Yuma Scorpions in 2011, compiled a 1.96 ERA in 59 2/3 innings pitched at Double-A Portland last season, striking out 59 and walking 15. He then impressed in a stint in the Arizona Fall League, posting a 1.38 ERA with 14 strikeouts and five walks in 13 innings pitched. It was only a crowded PawSox bullpen that forced the 25-year-old lefty to open back with the Sea Dogs this season -- and he always was a dark-horse candidate to contribute to the Red Sox bullpen this season.
