(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- The Norfolk Tides took the series finale, 9-2, on Sunday afternoon behind an eight-strikeout Triple-A debut by RHP Zach Davies (1-0, 0.00) to split the four-game set with the Knights.
Norfolk took the lead with an unearned run in the third inning, as an RBI-single by Tides first baseman Chris Parmelee scored Garabez Rosa - who had reached base on a fielding error - to put the visitors up 1-0.
The Tides used two long balls off of Knights starter RHP Scott Carroll - who was saddled with the loss - in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 3-0. Carroll (0-1, 4.50) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over four innings.
A pair of RBI-groundouts then gave Norfolk a five-run advantage after left-handed reliever Zach Phillips allowed a walk and a pair of singles to start the fifth inning.
After retiring eleven consecutive batters, Davies pitched around a walk and a Leury Garcia single to strand Jared Mitchell at third base and hold on to the 5-0 lead. The 22-year-old allowed only two hits and three walks over five innings, earning the win in his Triple-A debut.
The lead was stretched to six when Rosa led off the seventh inning with the Tides third home run of the night.
The Knights got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning when Dan Black - who knocked in three of the team's four runs on Saturday night - tagged a LHP Patrick McCoy offering for a solo shot to deep left field.
The lead was cut to 6-2 later in the inning when Matt Davidson came through with an RBI single off of RHP Steve Johnson, but the righty was able to get George Kottaras to fly out to short for the final out of the inning, stranding two runners and preserving the four-run advantage.
Tides catcher Steve Clevenger doubled off of Knights reliever RHP Daniel Webb in the eighth inning and came in to score, pushing the Norfolk advantage to 7-2.
Two more insurance runs were added in the ninth, including Clevenger's RBI-single - his third hit of the game - to conclude the scoring.
The Charlotte Knights continue their homestand on Monday as the Durham Bulls come to Uptown Charlotte for a two-game series. RHP Shawn Haviland is set to make his Knights debut on Monday against Bulls lefty Scott Diamond. A 7:05 PM first pitch is scheduled, with gates opening at 6:00 PM.
