PawSox Magic Number Falls to One after 2-0 Victory

PAWTUCKET, R.I. - The Pawtucket Red Sox downed the Syracuse Chiefs 2-0, in front of 5,021 fans on Thursday night at McCoy Stadium. With Rochester's loss, the PawSox narrow their magic number down to 1 to clinch their second consecutive division title. Pawtucket improves to 16-3 over their last 19 games.
Pawtucket (77-62) grabbed both of their runs against Syracuse starter Yunesky Maya early on. After Jackie Bradley Jr. and Brandon Snyder opened the game with singles, DH Ryan Lavarnway drove in the first run with an RBI base hit to right to right that scored Bradley Jr. from third.
One batter later, right fielder Bryce Brentz drove in Snyder with a grounder to short, giving the PawSox a 2-0 first inning lead. Maya (8-8) proved to be tough the rest of the way, finishing his night with six innings of two-run ball and striking out nine batters.
23-year-old right-hander Matt Barnes made his Triple-A debut after starting 24 games for the Portland Seadogs (5-10, 4.33 ERA). He turned in an impressive 5 1/3 shutout innings for Pawtucket, surrendering just 3 hits, while tallying 7 strikeouts on 86 pitches for the win (1-0). Ryan Rowland-Smith retired the next two Syracuse hitters in the sixth to preserve the lead.
The Chiefs (65-75) put the crowd on the edge of their seats in the seventh. Converted PawSox reliever Rubby De La Rosa struggled and departed with two outs after allowing two walks and a single. However, Chris Martin was called upon from the bullpen and got leadoff batter Eury Perez to fly out harmlessly to center.
Anthony Carter tallied his 24th save of the season, tying him with former PawSox pitcher, Travis Hughes (2007) for Pawtucket's single season record.
Both teams had six hits. Snyder finished his rehab assignment 1-for-3 with a run scored and played 5 innings at third base.
The Pawsox continue their four-game set with Syracuse tomorrow night at a special starting time, 6:15. Rehabbing Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz (9-0, 1.71 w/ Boston) is scheduled to throw for Pawtucket against Chiefs' righty Jeff Mandel (3-9, 4.78).
After the conclusion of the ballgame, fans will be treated to a spectacular firework display to Country music, presented by Action Auto Parts, Papa Gino's, Lifetime Medical Home Care, and Cat Country 98.1.
