Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, were shut out on Thursday by the Pawtucket Red Sox, 2-0. Chiefs starter Yunesky Maya tossed 6 innings of two-run ball, but Syracuse was held off the scoreboard by the PawSox pitching staff.

Pawtucket (77-62) wasted no time with its bats, scoring the game's first runs in the initial inning. The rally began when Jackie Bradley Jr. led off with a single into left field. After Brandon Snyder followed with a single to center field, Ryan Lavarnway ripped a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Bradley Jr. After a Mark Hamilton groundout moved Snyder to third base and Lavarnway to second base, Bryce Brentz grounded out to shortstop, allowing Snyder to score, giving the PawSox a 2-0 lead.

Two runs were all Pawtucket needed behind a great collective pitching performance. Starter Matt Barnes tossed five-plus innings, allowing just three hits in his Triple-A debut. The bullpen followed with over three innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just two hits. Anthony Carter picked up his 24th save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Syracuse (65-75) never got the bats going, but the pitching staff held Pawtucket to just two runs. Maya hurled six innings, fanning nine PawSox batters. Xavier Cedeno and Mike Crotta combined to toss two shutout innings.

Syracuse continues its four-game series with Pawtucket tomorrow at 6:15.

The Chiefs will send right-hander Jeff Mandel to the mound to face PawSox right-hander Clay Buchholz.
