August 27, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Friday night was a perfect night in PawSox Nation. The PawSox swept a doubleheader in Scranton 6-1 and 7-3 and Lehigh Valley took a tumble against Louisville, 7-4. As a result, the Sox lead the North by a game and a half with just 8 games remaining on the schedule. The doubleheader was necessitated in anticipation of Hurricane Irene. As a result, Sundays' game has been wiped off the schedule.
In game 1, Matt Fox returned from the disabled list and fired 5 scoreless innings at the Yankees. Fox (9-4) allowed 1 hit while striking out 5. Daniel Nava belted a first inning homer. He had 2 RBI in the game. In the second inning, Jose Iglesias hit his first-ever professional home run, a liner over the left field fence. It was Joses' 593d professional at bat. Hector Luna added a two run double in the sixth inning. Adam Warren of the Yankees was tagged with the loss despite striking out 11 Pawtucket hitters in 6 and two thirds innings.
In the nightcap, the PawSox trailed 2-1 after one inning. Jorge Vazquez hammered the first of his two home runs, a two run shot. In the bottom of the sixth Vazquez hit a titanic shot, a solo homer, accounting for all 3 Yankees runs. In the Pawtucket first, Luna had an RBI single. In the second, the Sox scored a pair, highlighted by an Iglesias double. In the third, a double by Luna and a sacrifice fly by Brett Carroll capped the Pawtucket scoring until Luna struck again, with a run-scoring base hit in the seventh and an RBI base hit by Will Middlebrooks.
Jason Rice made the "spot" start for the PawSox (76-58). The right hander put the club in a good position, allowing two runs in three innings. Hideki Okajima was credited with the win. Okajima (7-1) fanned three in 2 scoreless innings. Tommy Hottovy earned the save.
The series is scheduled to continue on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Tony Pena (9-5, 3.46) faces lefty Manny Banuelos (1-2, 3.86)
