G-Braves, Teheran Tangle up Tides 4-2
August 27, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves held down the Norfolk Tides 4-2 on Saturday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. Pitching was once again on the docket for a Gwinnett victory, as ace Julio Teheran notched another historic win and Atlanta Braves rehab Peter Moylan backed him up nicely in another healthy effort. The G-Braves (73-61) remain in second place in the International League South at 3.0 games behind Durham. Gwinnett is also second in the Wild Card race by a 2.0 game margin behind Lehigh Valley. The Tides (52-81) remain in last place in the IL South.
It Was Over When: Gwinnett got great pitching, but it was one swing of the bat that put the home team over the top tonight. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the 4th inning, Wes Helms led the inning off reaching on an error and Mauro Gomez followed that with a home run blast into the grassy berm for a 3-2 advantage the G-Braves wouldn't give up.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting RHP Teheran (15-2) went 6.0 IP, allowing 2 R/ER on 4 H, 2 BB and 5 K's. His league-leading 15th win, which is also already a Gwinnett record for wins in a season, is the most victories by a Braves Triple-A pitcher since Trey Hodges grabbed 15 wins for the Richmond Braves in 2002. He hasn't allowed more than 2 R in any of his last four starts. RHP Moylan went a scoreless 7th inning, allowing 1 H, 1BB and striking out 2 including the final batter of the inning with the bases loaded in his third ML rehab appearance for the Braves. RHP Jairo Asencio went a scoreless 9th inning for his 23rd save of the season and 50th of his Gwinnett career.
At the Plate: Mauro Gomez, at 1B, was 1-for-4 in the game with his HR and 2 RBI. Ruben Gotay played 2B and was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a SB, while RF Stefan Gartrell also had a 2-for-4, 1 RBI night. Leadoff hitter and CF Wilkin Ramirez went 3-for-4 with 2 SB.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: Norfolk starting LHP Chris George (6-5) went 6.2 IP, yielding 4 R/3 ER on 10 H, 1 BB, 2 K's and a HR allowed in defeat.
At the Plate: Tides LF Robbie Widlansky paced the squad with a 2-for-3 night with an RBI, while 1B Brandon Snyder was 1-for-4 with another RBI.
On Deck: The G-Braves wrap up this four game series against the Norfolk Tides and, in turn, the homestand on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Gwinnett's starter has yet to be announced, but whoever it is will go against Tides RHP Chris Tillman (3-4, 4.31), who threw a no-hitter against Gwinnett at Coolray Field last season. The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM. Fans can also follow at www.twitter.com/GwinnettBraves, gametracker on www.gwinnettbraves.com or MiLB TV at www.MiLB.com .
Etc: After the Sunday game, children can get on the same field as their favorite Gwinnett Braves and run the bases. When they are done, families can go into the outfield have a catch, too, at Coolray Field.
