TODAY'S GAME:
Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons face the Toledo Mud Hens in the finale of a four-game series from Fifth Third Field (7:00 p.m.). The Herd is 3-4 on its current roadtrip, having won the first three games in Columbus before dropping four straight. The Bisons return home to Buffalo tomorrow to host Rochester for two games and Syracuse for two games.
VS. THE HENS:
The Bisons are still in search of a solution to Fifth Third Field. Buffalo has lost the first three games of this series and has now lost 12 straight in Toledo. The last time the Bisons won at Fifth Third Field was a 5-3 victory on May 28, 2008. A win today would snap that streak and give the Herd a 4-4 split in their 2011 season series against the Mud Hens.
BACK ON THE BUMP:
RHP BRIAN SWEENEY will start tonight as RHP Miguel Batista was promoted to New York yesterday. Sweeney went 2-3 in five starts with the Herd after being signed on May 6. He was then moved to the bullpen where he has worked in relief in 23 of his last 24 outings. Sweeney did make a spot start in the second game of a doubleheader on August 15 against Durham. He allowed two runs in 3.1 innings of a no-decision.
MIXED RESULTS:
The Bisons scored 31 runs in the first three games of this roadtrip, racking up victories of 15-3, 10-2 and 6-4 over the Clippers. However, the Herd has produced just six runs in four losses since. Buffalo was shutout 5-0 by the Clippers on August 23 and 1-0 by Toledo last night.
SPIN CONTROL:
INF JORDANY VALDESPIN brings a five-game hit streak into tonight's game. The Triple-A rookie has averaged .381 (8-21) with four doubles, three RBI and two runs scored Since August 22. In the seven games this roadtrip began, Valdespin has hit .353 with a home run and seven RBI.
BISONS BITS:
OF JESUS FELICIANO has 366 hits for his three-year Bisons career, 12 shy of Bill Selby's modern era record total of 378...INF VALENTINO PASCUCCI has 90RBI on the season, tops in the International League. He also ranks second with 69 walks on the year...RHP DALE THAYER is sixth in the IL with his 18 saves.
METS UPDATE:
The Mets (63-68) shutout the Braves, 6-0, thanks to a dominating performance from LHP CHRIS CAPUANO. The southpaw allowed just two hits and struck out 13 batters to improve to 10-11 on the year. The Mets now have the weekend off, as both games scheduled have been postponed because of Hurricane Irene.
