PawSox Go Homer Happy

May 27, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

The Pawtucket Red Sox got off to a fast start on Sunday night, hitting three home runs in the first inning, five overall, and hanging on for a 7-4 win. Pedro Ciriaco belted a leadoff blast. Nate Spears came next and the two went back-to-back. After Darnell McDonald lined out to third, Lars Anderson ripped one at the scoreboard in right-center field. The last time the PawSox had three homers in a single inning was on August 1, 2008. Chris Carter, George Kottaras and Gil Velazquez all went deep against Rochester. The PawSox scored again in the third on an Anderson single, plating Spears. In the sixth, Anderson blasted his second homer of the night as Pawtucket reclaimed the lead 5-4. In the eighth, Alex Hassan chipped in with a two run shot to cap the scoring.

Brandon Duckworth pitched 5 innings, but did not figure in the decision. With Pawtucket leading 4-2, reliever Clay Mortenson allowed a pair of runs to score in the sixth. He followed with a shutout seventh. Tony Pena worked the eighth and Will Inman closed out the game with a scoreless ninth. The PawSox are at a season-high, 13 games over .500 at 32-19, in first place in the North Division. Pawtucket and Toledo finish the season series 4-4.

The Norfolk Tides, managed by former Pawtucket skipper, Ron Johnson (2005-2009) come in for a four game series that begins on Monday at 4:05 p.m. Zach Clark (NR) faces Doug Mathis (3-2, 4.23).
