Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Buffalo, NY - Steve Pearce's 10th home run of the season broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (26-22) picked up a 1-0 win in the series finale of a four game set vs. the Buffalo Bisons (28-22) at Coca-Cola Field on Sunday afternoon.
Starting pitchers Ramon Ortiz (WP, 3-3) of the Yankees and Chris Schwinden (LP, 3-4) of Buffalo each carried a shutout into the sixth inning. Schwinden fell behind SWB lead off man Matt Antonelli 3-0 before striking him out for the first out of the inning. With one down Pearce took a Schwinden offering over the wall in centerfield for his team leading 10th homer of the season. The solo shot gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead and as it turned out would be all the offense the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would need.
Schwinden's day ended after 5.2 innings of work, Ortiz pitched through the sixth and into the Bison seventh. Jordany Valdespin led off the Buffalo seventh with a single to left field. Lucas May failed to advance Valdespin to second with a foul out to catcher Francisco Cervelli on a sacrifice bunt attempt and he remained at first base with one down. Valdespin tried moving into scoring position on his own with a steal of second base but was thrown out by Cervelli for the second out of the inning. After an infield single by Michael Fisher, SWB went to the pen as Juan Cedeno got out of the seventh and recorded the first two outs in the eighth keeping the shutout in tact.
Kevin Whelan (SV, 12) came in replacing Cedeno with two out in the Bisons eighth inning and retired Josh Satin on a foul pop to first base to get the Yankees to the ninth still leading 1-0. The IL leader in saves made it 12 for 12 on the season as he set down the Bisons in the ninth saving the game for Ortiz, who has won his last three starts and has allowed just two runs in his last 21.2 innings pitched.
The Yankees and Toledo Mud Hens open up a four game series at Frontier Field in Rochester on Monday afternoon with a 4:05 PM first pitch. Right hander Nelson Figueroa (2-1, 5.40) gets the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while left hander Andy Oliver (3-3, 3.99) gets the start for Toledo.
