GAME #49 - ROAD GAME #27 - 2:05 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (20-28) at GWINNETT BRAVES (29-20)
RHP BRENDAN WISE (0-1, 6.35) vs. RHP JAIR JURRJENS (2-2, 6.10)
THAT'S JUST PEACHY: The Rochester Red Wings today close out their 4-game series and 8-game season series against Gwinnett (Braves). Today marks the 8th game in 9 days featuring the 2 teams, with the first 4 being played at Frontier Field in Rochester. The Wings' roadtrip continues tomorrow with the opener of a 4-game set at Charlotte (White Sox). The Red Wings then return home on Friday for an 8-game homestand with Columbus (Indians) and Norfolk (Orioles).
ROSTER NEWS: Righthander Jeff Manship, who was scheduled to start today's game at Gwinnett, has been recalled by the Minnesota Twins. Righthander Brendan Wise will start in his place. Wise has started one other game this season, the 2nd game of a May 5 doubleheader vs. Buffalo (Mets). He tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, but did not factor in the decision in Rochester's 5-0 win.
a Manship is the 8th Red Wing to get a promotion to the Twins this season, joining catcher Drew Butera, righthander Cole DeVries, lefthander Scott Diamond, infielder Brian Dozier, outfielder Darin Mastroianni, outfielder Ben Revere, and righthander P.J. Walters.
a This marks the 4th year in a row Manship has been with the big league club. He is 3-2 with a 5.63 ERA in 29 career major league games (6 starts), all with the Twins.
a To make room for Manship on the roster, the Twins designated for assignment outfielder Erik Komatsu. He batted .219 (7-for-32) with one RBI in 15 games.
ON THE BLACKBURNER: Twins righthander Nick Blackburn on Tuesday will make a rehabilitation start for the Red Wings at Charlotte. The 30-year-old was placed on the 15-Day Disabled List May 17 with a strained left quadriceps. Blackburn went 1-4 with an 8.37 ERA in 7 starts before the injury. The Oklahoma native, who was selected by the Twins in the 29th round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, played parts of 3 seasons with the Red Wings in 2005, 2007, and 2010.
a Righthander Daryl Thompson will not make his scheduled start tomorrow in the series opener at Charlotte. His replacement is to be determined.
CALLING ALL STARS: Online voting for the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game is underway. The game, featuring the International League and the Pacific Coast League, will be played at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field on July 11. Fans can vote by visiting RedWingsBaseball.com and clicking on the "Triple-A All-Star Game voting underway" link under "Headlines" on the home page.
a Leading Red Wings candidates include righthander Anthony Slama, owner of 8 saves, a 0.44 ERA, and a 15.0 consecutive scoreless innings streak; and outfielder Matt Carson, who leads Rochester with a .291 average, 46 hits, 15 extra-base hits, 12 doubles, 12 RBI, 65 total bases, and 21 runs scored.
INFINITE THREES: The Red Wings have reached the one-third point of the season, going 20-28 through their first 48 games. Rochester is one game better than they were at this same point last year and 2 games better than the 2010 club at the one-third mark.
a Rochester has lost 3 of their last 4 and 4 of their last 6, but is still 6-5 in its last 11 games. They are 11-14 thus far in May after going 9-14 in April. The Red Wings need to win their remaindeing 5 games in May to register their first winning calendar month since August 2009, when they went 17-15.
ROAD TEST: Since sweeping a 2-game series at Syracuse (Nationals) to open the season, the Red Wings have won just 2 games away from Frontier Field in 16 tries. Both victories in the last 16 true road games have come with Liam Hendriks as the starting pitcher. He is scheduled to pitch Wednesday at Charlotte.
IF I COULD BE LIKE MIKE: Michael Hollimon yesterday hit his team-leading 3rd home run, a solo shot in the 7th off Todd Redmond that tied the score at 2-2. Hollimon leads the club in homers despite missing 22 games while on the 7-Day Disabled List with a right elbow contusion.
a Hollimon's blast was just the Red Wings' 6th away from Frontier Field. Rochester has hit 19 home runs overall, the 2nd-lowest total in the league ahead of only Indianapolis' 17.
a The Red Wings have recorded at least one extra-base hit in 22 straight games, their longest suck streak since a 22-gamer from August 6-26, 2011.
OH, DANNY BOY: Danny Valencia yesterday extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an 8th-inning single. The 11-game hitting streak is the longest by a Red Wing in 2012, one better than Matt Carson's 10-gamer from May 5-15. The longest hitting streak by a Red Wing in 2011 was Brian Dinkelman's 13-game tear May 1-17.
a Valencia is batting .341 (15-for-44) with 2 doubles, 2 homers, 10 RBI, and 8 runs scored during the streak.
BASEBALL MONTH IN ROCHESTER: The Red Wings and Monroe County have proclaimed May as "Baseball Month in Rochester." Frontier Field is hosting games on 26 of the 31 days in the month, as the Empire State Yankees share the downtown ballpark with the Red Wings. While there is no game today in Rochester, here are the details of Spikes' appearance and the month-long raffle:
a Spikes appearance: Clubhouse Fun Center (Rochester)
a The BMIR raffle has raised $7,217 thus far. There are 4 raffles to go in the month, and all money will go to the 26 not-for-profit organizations being hosted in a complimentary suite during BMIR.
