
Patriots top Ducks 6-3

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 6-3 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.
The Patriots took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman George Sandel singled and scored on a triple by designated hitter Henri Stanley. Left fielder Larry Barnes plated Stanley with a ground out and third baseman Jeff Nettles hit a solo home run over the left field wall (16).
Somerset added three runs to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sandel and shortstop Kevin Nicholson both walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Stanley. Barnes then hit a two-run double, scoring Sandel and Nicholson. Barnes came around to score on a fielding error to extend the lead to 6-0.
Long Island broke the shut out in the top of the seventh inning. Second baseman Elvis Pena singled, stole second base, and scored on a single by catcher Greg Connors making the score 6-1.
The Ducks added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning. First baseman Henry Rodriguez singled and scored on a two-run home run by right fielder Juan Gonzalez (5).
Patriots starter Robert Averette (4-1) picked up the win, allowing an earned run on five hits and nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched. Ducks starter Tim Cain (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in seven innings pitched. Patriots reliever Mike Johnson picked up his ninth save of the season
The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Saturday night with a 7:05 pm game against the Long Island Ducks. Saturday's game includes Carnival Night presented by Celebration Party Rentals.
