Valencia slams Road Warriors; Bears in first place

NEWARK, NJ - Newark Bears catcher Victor Valencia blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Bears ahead of the Road Warriors 11-8. Newark would hold on for a 13-9 victory Friday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With win, coupled by Bridgeport and Long Island losses, the Bears are now in a three team tie for first place in the North Division of the Atlantic League with an 11-8 record.

Trailing 8-7 with bases loaded and 2-outs in the bottom of the sixth Valencia crushed a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for his second home run of the game, and his ninth of the season. Valencia finished the game 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored, and five RBI.

After the Road Warriors took a 5-2 lead in the top of the third inning, Bears left-fielder Jose Herrera hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Bears took a 7-5 lead with four runs while sending ten batters to the plate, led by a solo home run by Valencia and RBI singles by Herrera and right-fielder Al Benjamin. Herrera ended the game 4-for-5 with two home runs, a solo home run in the fourth and a two-run home run in bottom of the seventh, four runs scored, and four RBI. He now has 11 home runs on the season.

Left-Fielder Bernie Gonzalez led the Road Warriors offensively going 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, two runs scored, and one RBI.

Domingo Acosta (7-4) earned his first victory as a Newark Bear allowing one run in one inning while striking out one, while Chris Clem (1-1) took the loss allowing four runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning.

The Bears and Road Warriors continue the three-game series with game two on Saturday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm with New Jersey native Carlos Mirabal (2-3) on the mound for the Bears against Kyle Goldwater (5-6) for the Road Warriors. Gates open at 5:05 pm with the first 1,500 fans receiving a FREE Newark Bears Hat.
