Patriots Slug Five Homers To Win 13-7

LANCASTER, PA- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 13-7 at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Thursday evening.

The Patriots broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Designated hitter Todd Leathers led off with a single to left and came around to score when catcher Travis Anderson ripped a RBI double down the left field line. Second baseman Danny Garcia then drove in Anderson when he crushed a one out two run home run to left, his 4th of the 2007 season.

The Barnstormers sent twelve men to the plate and scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a commanding 7-3 lead. Shortstop Danny Gonzalez led off with a solo home run to right center, his 6th of the year. Lancaster then loaded the bases on walks to first baseman Jeremy Todd and rightfielder Dominick Ambrosini and a bunt single to catcher Lance Burkhart. Centerfielder Jutt Hileman followed with a walk to drive in Todd and then designated hitter Mike Woods drew a walk to plate Ambrosini. Third baseman Steve Van Note then delivered a two run single to right to score Burkhart and Hileman. After a walk to second baseman Bo Hart reloaded the bases, leftfielder Quincy Foster lined a two run single to left that scored Woods and Van Note.

Somerset answered with five runs in the top of the seventh inning to retake the lead at 8-7. Shortstop Teuris Olivares lined a two out single to left and scored when centerfielder Mike Lockwood followed with a two run home run to right, his 6th of the year. Third baseman Jeff Nettles then doubled down the left field line and after first baseman Josh Pressley drew a walk, rightfielder Alan Zinter slammed a three run home run to right center, his 3rd of the year.

The Patriots added five more runs in the top of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 13-7. Leftfielder Elliott Ayala drew a one walk, stole second and advanced to third on a Barnstormer throwing error. After a walk to Garcia, Olivares drove in Ayala with a sacrifice fly to deep left. After Lockwood walked to put men on first and second, Nettles crushed a three run home run to right center, his league leading 12th of the year. Pressley then followed with a line drive solo home run to right, his 5th of the year.

Patriots reliever Brandon Knight (1-1) picked up the win, throwing two scoreless innings allowing one hit while striking out three and walking one. Barnstormers reliever James Lira (1-2) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on three hits while walking four and striking out one in 1.1 innings of work.

With the win the Patriots improved to 18-15 on the 2007 season while the Barnstormers dropped to 13-19.
