Five Run Fourth Beats Bears

NEWARK, NJ - June 8, 2007 - The Newark Bears were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers 10-4 in front of 4,081 fans Friday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront.

With the game tied at one entering the top of the fourth inning, the Barnstormers sent ten men to the plate scoring five runs to jump ahead of the Bears 6-1. Left-fielder Dominick Ambrosini began the scoring with an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice-fly by second baseman Bo Hart. Shortstop Danny Gonzalez walked with base loaded and center-fielder Jutt Hileman hit a two-run single to left field.

The Bears scored runs in the bottom of the third inning and bottom of the sixth inning. Trailing 1-0 in the third, right-fielder Jose Herrera hit an RBI infield single scoring shortstop Ramon Castro from third base to tie the game. Entering the sixth inning, with the Barnstormers ahead 9-1, the Bears scored three runs with RBI singles by shortstop Josh Arteaga and center-fielder Keith Reed, and an bases loaded walk by second baseman Javier Colina.

For the Bears Castro, Herrera, and Arteaga led the offense with two hits each. For the Barnstormers, third baseman Steve Van Note went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, and a run scored, while Burkhart went 1-for-2 including his fifth home run of the season, and Hart went 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season.

Bears starter Jeriome Robertson (1-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on four hits in four innings pitched, while Barnstormers starter Clayton Andrews (1-1) earned the victory after pitching 5.1 innings surrendering four runs on eight hits.

The Bears and Barnstormers will play game two of the three-game series Saturday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Bobby Brownlie (3-2) will take the mound for the Bears against Gustavo Martinez (2-2) for the Barnstormers. Gates open at 5:05 PM to The Den to Little League Night featuring a 28-inch Little League Bat giveaway to the first 1,000 children (14 and under). In addition, the Bears will host Block Party Saturdays featuring games, music, and grilled food for a block party Newark Bears style.
