Patriots hand Barnstormers first ever loss

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 2-1, breaking a tie game in the bottom of the ninth inning, before 4,389 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.

Patriots designated hitter Mamon Tucker reached on an error to lead of the bottom of the ninth inning and stole second base. Right fielder Ryan Radmanovich drew a walk and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Ryan Kellner. Center fielder Jeremy Owens followed with a sacrifice fly to win the Patriots first game of the season.

The Patriots scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Right fielder Ryan Radmanovich drew a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Ryan Kellner. Radmanovich advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball to make the score 1-0.

Lancaster tied up the game in the top of the ninth inning. Designated hitter Oreste Marrero singled and was replaced by pinch runner Joe Nichols. Second baseman Justin Hileman followed with a two out double to score Nichols and tie up the game 1-1.

Robert Marquez (1-0) picked up the win, allowing an earned run on three hits and four strikeouts in two innings pitched. Lancaster reliever Cliff Smith (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing a run in 0.2 innings pitched.

The Patriots received a strong performance from starter Scott Sobkowiak, who pitched five scoreless innings and allowed four hits and struck out four. Reliever David Elder pitched two scoreless innings and struck out six batters.

The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Saturday evening with a 7:05 pm game against the Lancaster Barnstormers. Fans will have the chance to win $5,000 and also enjoy Girl Softball Night on Saturday.
