Bears bats bludgeon Surf

ATLANTIC CITY - The Newark Bears scored four runs in the fourth and added three more in the fifth to defeat the Atlantic City Surf 8-3 Friday night at Sandcastle Stadium. The victory left the Bears at 3-0; Atlantic City fell to 0-2.

Trailing 2-0 going into the fourth, the Bears struck after Surf starter and loser Andy Beal had retired the first nine hitters he faced. Third baseman Melvin Falu started the inning with a triple to right centerfield. After a walk to Jack Santora, Jason Perez drove in Falu with a base hit. It was the start of a big night for Perez who went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI for the Bears.

Will Quintana also drove in two runs in the fourth inning with a single. The Bears added three more runs in he fifth off Atlantic City reliever Ryan Mottl and never looked back on their way to the victory. Newark pounded out 11 hits in the win.

Newark starter Greg Bauer got the victory for the Bears. Bauer worked 6 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and one earned run to earn his first triumph of the season.

Beal gave up three hits and four runs in a losing effort for Atlantic City. Jimmy Hurst was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Atlantic City and catcher Mikael Rivera was 2-for-4.

The two teams continue their four-game series Saturday night at the Sandcastle where Newark's Pat Daneker will face Atlantic City's Marty Janzen at 6:35 p.m. There will be a post-game fireworks show sponsored by Local Participating Chevrolet Dealers.
