Patriots Down Bears 9-6

Matt Hagen and Josh Pressley each hit a big three-run homer and Bill Pulsipher pitched five-plus innings to earn his second win, leading the Somerset Patriots to a 9-6 victory over the Newark Bears at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium Sunday night.

The Patriots wasted little time taking control of the game, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning off Bears starter Matt Smith (6-10). Wayne Lydon and Jeff Nettles reached on a pair of walks in the first. Hagen unleashed a two out, three-run shot, his fourth of the season to put Somerset ahead 3-0. The Patriots added another run in the home second when Elliott Ayala singled and came around to score on a Lydon single.The lead grew to six runs as Hagen plated his fourth RBI with a double in the fifth followed by a run-scoring groundout from Ayala later in the frame.

Newark tried to stage a comeback against Pulsipher as they plated four runs in the home fifth. Gabe Suarez, Randy Gress and Pablo Ozuna all reached on infield singles, with Suarez scoring on a throwing error. Kennard Jones groundout scored the second run and a wild pitch brought home Ozuna. Manny Mejia, the hero two nights prior, ripped a RBI double to slice the Somerset lead to 6-4.

The Patriots extended the lead in the top of the sixth inning as Pressley belted a three-run homer, his 16th of the season, going the opposite way to left field off reliever Greg Reinhard. The Bears seemed ready to convert their fourth straight walk-off win. Ozuna and Brian Barton both walked and Jones reached on a single to load the bases. A wild pitch and a Mejia RBI groundout brought home a pair. After Carl Everett was hit by a pitch, Newark had runners on the corners for Eric Munson, but flied out to center to end the game.

Pulsipher (2-0) scattered nine hits and allowed four earned runs in five and one-third innings, with six strikeouts. Casey Cahill, Ben Grezlovski, and Scott Williamson combined to surrender just three hits, two earned runs and struck out three over three and two-third innings of relief. Smith surrendered six earned runs over five innings, allowing seven hits, walking four and striking out three. Daryle Ward continued his hot hitting with three hits, giving him seven hits for the series against Somerset. Jones, Suarez and Gress had two hits each for Newark.
