Long Island Ducks News Release
The Los Angeles Dodgers called up Jay Gibbons to the majors on Sunday from Triple-A Albuquerque, making the outfielder the seventh former Duck to make it back to the Major League level after playing on Long Island. Gibbons joins Carlos Baerga, Bill Pulsipher, Nelson Figueroa, Pedro Borbon, Jr., Ken Ray and Mel Stocker as Ducks that have made it back to the game's highest level after playing at the Duck Pond.
"I'm just grateful to the Dodgers for giving me the opportunity to play in the minor leagues," Gibbons told ESPN.com. "I was trying to finish the season strong down there and hoping for [a call-up] in September, but I got a pleasant surprise."
Gibbons donned a Long Island Ducks uniform during the 2008 season, posting a .280 batting average along with five home runs and 19 RBI in 27 games, earning a trip to the Milwaukee Brewers organization. The Michigan native went on to hit .273 with Double-A Huntsville and .312 with Triple-A Nashville.
The 33-year-old began the 2010 season with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes in the Dodgers organization and compiled a .347 batting average, 19 homers, and 83 RBI in 94 games. This is Gibbons' eighth season in the Major Leagues, after spending his first seven with the Baltimore Orioles from 2001 to 2007. He has a .260 career average with 121 homers and 406 RBI in 780 big league games. The 13-year pro was originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 14th round of the 1998 amateur draft.
The Long Island Ducks play their home games at Suffolk County Sports Park and are in their 11th season of play. Individual game tickets for the Ducks 2010 season are on sale now.
