Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
BRIDGEWATER, N.J. - The Sugar Land Skeeters were unable to hold a 2-0 lead as the team dropped its fourth-straight game, losing to the Somerset Patriots, 4-2. The loss drops the Skeeters to 28-27 on the season. It is just the second time this season that Sugar Land has lost when Matt Wright starts.
After being shut out in last night's affair, the Skeeters wasted no time in striking for a run in tonight's contest. Delwyn Young blasted a two-out double to center before Kevin Russo drove in the second baseman with a single to break the scoring seal.
Sugar Land continued to attack Somerset's starter, Sean Bierman, in the top of the fourth. Russo legged out an infield single and moved up to third on a double into right off the bat of Travis Scott. Chris Wallace knocked in Russo on a single into right field, staking the Skeeters to a 2-0 lead. Sugar Land was unable to tack on any more runs, however, following a shallow fly out to left and an infield popup ended the threat.
The Patriots cut Sugar Land's lead in half in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run from David Vidal, just the second hit of the evening surrendered by Wright.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth, Wright appeared as if he would breeze through another inning. The Patriots had other ideas, unfortunately, as Aharon Eggleston singled into left to keep the inning alive. Thomas Neal drew a five-pitch walk to put the go-ahead run on base before Scott Cousins singled into right, bringing in Eggleston and moving Neal up to third. After Cousins swiped second, Neal came in to score on a wild pitch, giving Somerset a 3-2 lead.
With Ramon Delgado on to pitch, Somerset tacked on an insurance run following a leadoff error in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Gamel reached base to open the inning on an error by Young at second. Robert Andino singled to first before Nate Spears laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Jonny Tucker lifted a sacrifice fly to right to increase the lead, 4-2.
Jon Hunton closed the door on the Skeeters, retiring the side in order in the ninth to wrap up the game.
