
Patriots Crush Barnstormers 11-2

LANCASTER, PA- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Lancaster Barnstormer 11-2 in front of 3,824 fans at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Patriots struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Centerfielder Sean Smith led off with a single to left, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Barnstormers' throwing error on a fielder's choice ground ball to short off the bat of leftfielder Matt Hagen. First baseman Vito Chiaravalloti then followed by with a two out two run home run (14) to right center that plated Hagen.
Somerset rallied for five runs in the top of the second inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Designated hitter Ryan Radmanovich led off with a single to center, moved to third on a hit-and-run single to right by catcher Jason Belcher, and scored on a RBI double down the left field line by Smith. Belcher then scampered home on a wild pitch. Second baseman Gera Alvarez followed by lining a RBI double into the left field corner that plated Smith and then third baseman Brandon Larson ripped a RBI double down the left field line that scored Alvarez. After a groundout, Chiaravalloti delivered a two out RBI single to center that drove in Larson.
The Barnstormers scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 8-1 when first baseman Matt LeCroy led off with a double into the right field corner and came around to score on a two out RBI double down the right field line by catcher Kevin Kotch.
The Patriots answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 9-1 when Chiaravalloti led off with a double into the left field corner and came around to score on a RBI single up the middle by rightfielder Elliott Ayala.
Lancaster got a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Patriots lead to 9-2 when LeCroy doubled into the left field corner, advanced to third on a single to left by centerfielder Jutt Hileman and scored on a double play ball to second off the bat of rightfielder Jordan Herr.
Somerset plated a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it 11-2 when Smith drew a lead off walk and came around to score on a one out two run home run to left center by Larson (11).
Patriots' starter Jim Magrane (2-6) picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking three in six innings of work. Barnstormers' starter Eric Ackerman (3-5) suffered the loss, allowing eleven runs on 17 hits while walking two and striking out four in 7.1 innings pitched.
With the win the Patriots improved to 37-28 on 2008 season while the Barnstormers dropped to 28-38.
The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue on Thursday, July 3rd when the Patriots return to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against Freedom Division rivals, the Newark Bears.
