Newark Bears News Release
The Bears and the Somerset Patriots have been contending for the top spot in the Freedom Division for the entire first-half of the season. The battle will finally come to an end with a five-game series in Bridgewater, New Jersey that will determine once and for all who wins the Freedom Division title for the first half.
The Bears and Patriots have not been separated by more than three games in the standings, as was the case on May 26 when the Bears had their largest division lead of the season. Since May 29, neither team has been separated by more than a game in the standings.
In 2002, the Bears and Patriots were involved in a similar battle for the South Division first-half title. The two teams finished tied for first place, but the Bears won on the head-to-head tiebreaker with Somerset.
With a five-game, winner take all series, the Bears will clinch if they can win three of the five games. They have a 4-1 advantage over the Patriots this season, and have won both games played at Commerce Bank Ballpark.
Root for the Bears as they add another chapter to this storied rivalry this weekend!
