
Bears outslug Patriots

Bridgewater, NJ -The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 11-6 before 7,809 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Thursday night to move into first place in the Freedom Division.
The Bears took a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Bobby Hill drew a walk and scored on a two-run home run by center fielder Keith Reed (10). Right fielder Jose Herrera and shortstop Ramon Castro reached on singles and first baseman Randall Simon followed with an RBI single. Left fielder Ramon Nivar then hit an RBI double and designated hitter John Pachot's RBI single closed out the scoring.
Somerset answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Left fielder Michael Ryan singled and scored on a two-run home run by third baseman Brandon Larson (12) to cut the lead to 6-2.
Newark added a run in the top of the fourth inning. Catcher Scott Knazek singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Reed.
The Patriots made the score 7-5 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ryan hit a solo home run (11) to right center fielder. Designated hitter Vito Chiaravalloti then drew a walk and scored on a two-run home run by right fielder Ryan Radmanovich (5).
The Bears extended the lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Nivar drew a walk and scored on an RBI double by Pachot for an 8-5 advantage.
Somerset answered with a run on a solo home run by catcher Jason Belcher (4) to make the score 8-6.
Newark scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning on a three-run home run by Simon (4) to take an 11-6 lead.
Newark starter Mike Bumstead (8-5) picked up the win, allowing six earned runs on six hits in 5.2 innings pitched. Patriots starter Byron Batson (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in 0.1 innings pitched.
The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 5:05 pm game on July 4th against the Newark Bears. There will be a pre-game Kids Baseball Clinic and fans will have a chance to win $10,000 at the game.
