Asheville Tourists News Release
The Asheville Tourists took another step towards a first half Southern division crown by defeating the Greenville Drive 8-1 at Fluor Field Monday night. The T's worked a season-high 11 walks on the Drive's pitching staff and methodically pulled away for the victory.
Daniel Winkler notched his eighth win of the season by scattering nine hits and allowing just one run through six innings. For the third straight game, the Tourists bullpen did not allow a run as Mike Wolford and Russell Brewer combined to pitch the final three frames.
Asheville jumped in front with a run in the first inning. Tyler Massey singled with two outs and the bases loaded; plating Brian Humphries. Sam Mende was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Jose Garcia tied the game for Greenville with a lead-off Home Run in the bottom of the first. The Tourists kept the Drive scoreless the rest of the way while they tacked on runs throughout the game.
In the second, Asheville used an error to recapture the lead 2-1, and then made it 3-1 on Mende's sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Tyler Massey created a run in the fifth by singling, stealing second, advancing to third on an errant throw, and scoring when David Kandilas was picked off first base. Massey came through again in the sixth with an RBI single that scored Will Swanner.
In the ninth, the T's rallied for a three-spot. Kandilas doubled home a pair and Trevor Story capped the scoring effort with an RBI double to left.
Winkler induced double-plays in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Asheville's starting pitcher even worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the fifth unscathed. Brewer received his first save of the season by retiring the final five batters of the game.
The Drive's designated hitter Jason Repko, who is playing with Greenville on a Major League rehab assignment, finished 0-4 with three strikeouts.
