Parke Dazzles, But Barons Fall to Wahoos
August 3, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - John Parke turned in his fourth quality start in five outings, but the Birmingham Barons (23-17, 50-59) fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (21-21, 59-53) by a 3-1 final Saturday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Parke logged seven innings of work and allowed just two runs on six hits as the left-hander went pitch-for-pitch against Blue Wahoos starter Bryan Sammons.
Sammons posted six no-hit frames for Pensacola and Blue Wahoos left-hander Gabriel Moya took the no-hit bid into the eighth before a popup off the bat of Blake Rutherford fell harmlessly on the infield grass.
The Barons have been hit just eight times since the modern-day inception of the Southern League in 1964.
The Blue Wahoos scored their first two runs via the long ball as Trevor Larnach delivered a solo shot in the fourth and Ryan Costello did the same in the seventh to double in the lead.
A triple plus an error charged to Barons shortstop Zach Remillard allowed Pensacola's Royce Lewis to cross the plate with the third run of the game in the eighth.
Luis Gonzalez brought the Barons back within a pair of runs after he sent a line drive over the field-field fence to lead off the ninth. It marked the eighth home run of the season for the White Sox No. 13 prospect, three of which have come in the past five games.
Parke (L, 3-2) was saddled with a tough loss, while Sammons (W, 4-4) collected the win for the Wahoos. Right-hander Alex Phillips earned his fourth save of the season despite Gonzalez's homer in the ninth.
The Barons and Blue Wahoos will continue their five-game series Sunday night as Birmingham sends right-hander Blake Battenfield (4-3, 4.01) to the mound against Pensacola right-hander Edwar Colina (2-0, 1.08).
First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. CT at Blue Wahoos Stadium and the game will be broadcast via WJQX-FM 100.5.
