Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals capped their 2006 home schedule with a 5-3 victory over the Wichita Wranglers on Tuesday night at Hammons Field.
Nick Stavinoha's three-run blast highlighted a five-run first inning, as the Cards took the lead for good at 5-1 against Wichita starter Zack Greinke.
Trailing 1-0, the Cards put two men aboard for Stavinoha, who pulled a Greinke (8-3) offering down the left-field line for a three-run blast, making it 3-1. For Stavinoha, the home run is his 12th of the year. Springfield wasn't done there, as the Cards added two more runs. A run scored on a Travis Hanson single, as Wichita left fielder Chris Lubanski let Hanson's single skip by him, allowing Cody Haerther to come home. Kevin Estrada capped the inning by scoring on Iker Franco's RBI groundout, giving Springfield a 5-1 lead.
Cards' starter Mike Parisi, who allowed a first-inning home run to Donnie Murphy, allowed another Murphy home run in the third, a two-run shot to make it a 5-3 game. Parisi (9-7) would settle down in earning his ninth win of the year. He worked a total of 7 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, striking out nine men without allowing a walk.
Parisi left in the eighth with two outs, after allowing a two-out double to Chris Lubanski. Cards' reliever Troy Cate came on to fan Donnie Murphy to end the threat. Cate worked a 1-2-3 ninth in recording his first save as a Springfield Cardinal.
The Cardinals finish their home schedule with a record of 38-30. In the second half, Springfield improves to 24-41 and 63-70 overall. Springfield will hit the road to finish the 2006 season, as Jordan Pals (7-7) takes the mound on Wednesday night in Little Rock in game one against the Travs. Arkansas will send right-hander Nick Green to the mound in the first game of the five-game set. Game time from Ray Winder Field in Little Rock will be 7:10pm.
The fans of Springfield helped sell out Hammons Field for the 36th straight time on Tuesday night, and for the 47th time this year, with a crowd of 8,134. That number brings the total attendance in 2006 to 492,302 and a two-year total of 1,018,863.
The Springfield Cardinals wish to thank all the great fans who came out to Hammons Field and made 2006 so special!
