Lancaster Stormers News Release
Salvador Paniagua may have kept the York Revolution's playoff hopes alive on Tuesday evening.
The York Revolution catcher planted a two-run homer into the front of the Clipper Magazine Stadium picnic deck in the top of the seventh inning, and York's bullpen held the lead for the remainder of the night as the Revs dropped the Barnstormers, 10-9, in the second game of the three-game series.
With the win, York pulled back to within 3 ? games of the Barnstormers in the second half race. Lancaster has 25 games remaining on the schedule; York has 26.
Mikey Reynolds opened the seventh with an infield single behind second base and stole second off Blake Hassebrock (0-1). Paniagua kept his turn at the plate alive before launching a 1-2 pitch onto the deck for the 10-9 advantage.
Stephen Penney (4-4) kept the lead through the bottom of the seventh despite a leadoff single by Juan Apodaca. Kent Matthes doubled into the left field corner off Ron Schreurs in the eighth. Mike DeMark took over with a 1-1 count on Mike McDade and struck out the Lancaster first baseman, who switched around to bat from the left side. Kevin Rivers drove a fly ball deep to right center, but the ball would not carry and died in Jose Constanza's glove on the warning track for the final out.
Apodaca singled again in the ninth inning, but the Barnstormers were unable to get him around as DeMark earned his first save.
Neither started finished the fourth inning. York reached Chad Beck for four runs in the first, three on a double to right by Bryan Pounds, who scored on a single to left by Reynolds.
McDade singled home a run in the first, and Matthes doubled home two more in the third to cut the Revs lead to 4-3. York, however, stretched that lead back to four with three more in the fourth inning, like the first, with all runs coming after the second out. Eric Patterson made it 5-3 with a bloop hit to left, and, following two walks, Pounds singled home two more for a 7-3 cushion.
Lancaster roared back with four in the bottom of the inning, producing six hits from the first seven batters. Jerry Owens singled home one run off Matt Neil. Matthes greeted Tony Pena with a bases loaded single into right to whittle the lead to 7-5, and McDade tied the score with a two-run single into center.
The Barnstormers took their only lead of the night in the fifth as Charlie Cutler singled home Luke Hughes for an 8-7 edge. Yusuke Kajimoto later scored on a passed ball for the 9-7 advantage.
A double, single and error combined to get a York run home in the sixth.
The Barnstormers and Revs close out the series and their extended, 28-game season series on Wednesday at 7:00. Lancaster will send a spot starter to the hill against York left-hander Rommie Lewis (9-9). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
