York Revolution News Release
Bryan Pounds drove in five and Salvador Paniagua launched a go-ahead home run in the seventh as the York Revolution outslugged the Lancaster Barnstormers 10-9 on Tuesday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The win brings the Revs back within 3.5 games of first place in the Freedom Division's second half at 24-20, and sets up a rubber match in the series on Wednesday night.
Pounds (4-for-5) was the catalyst as the Revs twice built four-run leads, but would ultimately need another late comeback to secure the victory.
The Revs tied their biggest first inning of the season, batting around to score four times before taking the field defensively. Wilson Valdez picked up the first of five hits in the inning with one out and stole second. Brandon Boggs kept the inning alive with a two-out single to right before Andres Perez walked to load the bases. Pounds then drilled a bases-clearing three-run double to right, off the tip of right fielder Kevin Rivers' glove on a diving attempt. Mikey Reynolds followed with an RBI single through the left side, giving York a 4-0 head start.
Lancaster answered with a run in the home half, scoring on a two-out RBI single to left-center by Mike McDade. Kent Matthes then lined a two-run double down the right field line in the third, closing the gap to 4-3.
The Revs responded with a three-run spurt in the top of the fourth, building the lead back to 7-3. Once again, all of the runs scored with two outs. It was again Valdez who picked up the first hit on a two-out double to right, then scored as Eric Patterson blooped a single into shallow left. A pair of walks loaded the bases for Pounds, who again cashed in with a two-run single to left field, chasing starter Chad Beck, who allowed all seven runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings.
Lancaster did one better in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four times to tie the game at 7-7. A Luke Hughes double and a single by Charlie Cutler put runners at the corners to start things. With one out, Jerry Owens ripped an RBI single to right, and Zach Collier singled to load the bases, ending the night of York starter Matt Neil, who would also be charged with seven runs in 3.1 innings. Matthes greeted reliever Tony Pena with an RBI single to right, and McDade followed by nailing a two-run single to center, suddenly tying the score.
Lancaster took the lead with a pair of runs against reliever Edward Paredes in the fifth as Cutler pulled an RBI single to right and Yusuke Kajimoto crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Down 9-7, the Revs quickly got one back in the sixth as Patterson doubled to right-center to lead off the inning and scored when Boggs' single to right was fumbled by Rivers for an error.
Reynolds led off the seventh inning with an infield single and Paniagua followed with a go-ahead two-run homer to right, lifting the Revs back in front in dramatic fashion.
York's bullpen was outstanding down the stretch. After an ejection of Josh Judy during warmups in the middle of the sixth, Stephen Penney (4-4) entered and worked two scoreless innings, earning the win, adding to his club record for relief victories with 14 in his York career. Ron Schreurs retired Collier on a bunt try for the first out in the eighth before Matthes doubled to left. With a 1-1 count on McDade, Mike DeMark entered with the tying run at second and recorded a strikeout, before retiring Rivers on a towering fly ball caught by center fielder Jose Constanza just in front of the right-center fence. DeMark made it a five-out save, his first of the year, with a scoreless ninth inning, allowing only a one-out single to Juan Apodaca.
Notes: Both teams pounded 16 hits in the slugfest. It marks the 10th time in the last 21 games that York's offense has totaled at least 14 hits, as the Revs are batting .311 as a team during that span. York improves to 18-12 overall in the last 30 games. The Revs snap a three-game skid against Lancaster, improving to 12-15 in the season series with one game remaining. Paniagua (2-for-5) is now batting .356 with nine extra-base hits and 10 RBI in his last 15 games. Paniagua's home run was the 34th of his Revs career, tying Matt Esquivel for ninth in franchise history. Patterson scored twice, tying and moving past Keoni DeRenne for fourth in club history in runs scored (198). Patterson's double was the 70th of his Revs career, tying Scott Grimes for fourth in franchise history on that list. Valdez (2-for-4) logged his 13th multi-hit game in his last 25 games played, batting .348 on that stretch. York lefty Rommie Lewis (9-9, 3.97) will start Wednesday's game at 7 p.m., facing a Lancaster starter yet to be announced. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:40 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
