Norfolk Tides News Release

Home runs by Jeff Salazar and Rhyne Hughes were not enough as the Tides fell to Gwinnett 8-3 Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park.

Salazar's two-run blast came in the third inning and brought the Tides within 3-2, while Hughes' homer was a solo shot that pulled Norfolk to 5-3 an inning later. Both Salazar and Hughes now have three home runs each, with the pair accounting for six of Norfolk's eight home runs this season.

Gwinnett's Freddie Freeman enjoyed a fantastic day at the plate, as the 20-year-old prospect finished 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double and three runs scored. Freeman connected for both of his homers off of Norfolk starter Brandon Erbe (0-3), who surrendered five runs in five innings to drop his third straight decision to start the season.

Erbe yielded seven hits in his outing, although five went for extra-base hits. The 22-year-old struck out four and did not walk a batter, throwing 52 of his 79 pitches for strikes.

Mariano Gomez (1-0) earned the win in relief as he allowed one hit in 2.1 innings.

Hughes and Josh Bell each finished with two hits for the Tides, who have now lost six of their past seven games.

The Tides will head to Charlotte Friday night for the start of an eight-game road trip. Chris Tillman (0-3, 8.38) will look to pick up his first win of the year for Norfolk against Knights right-hander Lucas Harrell, with first pitch scheduled for 7:15.
