Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - The Bulls made it seven in a row and finished a four-game sweep of Charlotte with a 10-2 victory Thursday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Elliot Johnson paced the offense with a triple, a home run and four RBI while Carlos Hernandez picked up his second victory in as many starts. The win improves the Bulls to 11-3 on the season, 5.0 games ahead of the Knights for the lead in the Southern Division.
The offense got to Charlotte righty Dan Hudson early and often, tallying five runs over the first two innings. Desmond Jennings walked, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and came across on a wild pitch to start the first inning. In the second, Chris Richard scored on a throwing error by Knights shortstop Brent Lillibridge. Later in the inning, Elliot Johnson launched his second home run of the season, a three-run blast, deep over the wall in right-center to put the Bulls on top 5-0.
They added three more in the fifth, as the Bulls loaded the bases with nobody out to begin the inning. Ryan Shealy brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to left, which chased Hudson from the game in favor of left-hander Clevelan Santeliz. He walked Chris Richard to reload the bases, and Angel Chavez followed with a two-run single to make the score 8-0.
The lead was more than enough for Carlos Hernandez, who cruised through 7.0 innings to earn his second victory of the season. The left-hander allowed his only run of the night in the top of the sixth, walking Stefan Gartrell who advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a single by Javier Castillo. Hernandez allowed four hits and three walks while striking out five, lowering his ERA to 2.00 over his first three starts of the season.
Johnson helped the Bulls tack on two more insurance runs in the eighth inning, slicing an RBI-triple into the right field corner to bring home his fourth RBI of the night and 10th of the season. Johnson scored on a groundout by Justin Ruggiano, ending the scoring and giving the Bulls their fifth game with ten or more runs in their last seven contests.
The Bulls continue their homestand with as the Gwinnett Braves come to town to open up a four-game set at the DBAP. RHP Jeremy Hellickson (3-0, 1.42) takes the hill tomorrow matched up against RHP James Parr (1-1, 4.02) for the Braves. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
