Dayton Dragons News Release
Lansing, MIâ B.J. Szymanski and Phil Gentry both homered and Ramon Ramirez (WP, 1-1) tossed 6.0 shutout innings of baseball as the Dayton Dragons (27-34) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (32-29), 4-2 in front of 7,204 fans at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing, Michigan on Saturday night.
The start of the game was delayed by rain for one hour and 11 minutes before getting underway at 8:16 PM local time. Neither starting pitcher seemed to be affected by the delay, as Ramirez and Lansing's Danny Core (LP, 2-3) looked good early on.
The game remained scoreless into the Dayton fourth inning when the Dragons picked up a pair of runs off Core. B.J. Szymanski led off the inning with a shot to the gap in left center. The ball hit off the railing atop of the 15 foot high fence and bounced back on the outfield grass, remaining a live ball. Szymanski raced around the bases and slid into home just ahead of the Lugnuts relay throw for an inside the park home run and a 1-0 Dragons lead. Following a walk and a single, John Purdom delivered an RBI single to right field that scored Jeremiah Piepkorn for a 2-0 Dayton advantage.
Phil Gentry extended the Dragons lead to 4-0 in the fifth, with a two run blast off Core over the lawn section in right center. Gentry's third homer of the season knocked home his team leading 34th and 35th runs batted in. The fifth was the last inning for Core who surrendered four runs on six hits. The righty struck out and walked three batters.
The 4-0 lead was more than enough for Ramirez who picked up his first win of the season, tossing 6.0 innings of shutout baseball. He struck out five and hit one batter, while allowing only two hits.
Lansing got on the board in the eighth inning off Dayton reliever Joe Wilson (ND) who struggled in his second inning of work walked the bases loaded and with one down allowed a two RBI single to Aaron Mathews to cut the lead in half at 4-2. Jared Sanders (ND) came on with first and second and one down and walked the first man he faced to re-load the bases. Sanders induced David Hicks into a 1-2-3 double play that ended the threat and kept the Dragons lead at two.
Blake Hendley (SV, 6) earned his second save in the series and sixth of the season with a perfect ninth inning. The right hander struck out a pair and preserved the first win of the season for Ramirez.
1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the final game of the four game series between the Dragons and the Lugnuts at 2:05 PM Sunday afternoon beginning with the pre game show at 1:30 PM. The Dragons will send LHP Camilo Vazquez to the mound, while Lansing will counter with RHP A.J. Wideman.
