Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (June 11, 2005) - The Burlington Bees (30-31) and Ft. Wayne Wizards (33-27) started play tonight at 6:02 PM and after a two hour and 11 minute rain delay in game one and an nine inning deadlock in game two, the night finally ended at 12:54 AM as Damaso Espino singled up the middle to drive in Irving Falu and give the Bees a 1-0 win in the night cap and a sweep of double-header tonight at Community Field.
The Bees carried a no-hitter through nine innings in game two. RH Greg Atencio made his first start of the season and pitched seven no-hit innings while walking three and striking out six. RH Chad Blackwell took over in the eighth and pitched two more no-hit innings to get the team through nine. The game continued into the tenth though, as the Bees stranded eight men and were scoreless after nine. With one out in the top of the tenth, Tom Vincent lined a single to left to break up the no-hitter, but Blackwell got out of the inning unscathed to keep the shutout intact. Going to the bottom of the tenth, the Bees knew it would be their last chance as the 12:50AM curfew time approached. Kyle Stutes went back to the mound for his second inning in relief and gave up a leadoff single to Falu. Geraldo Valentin followed with a bunt up the first base line that moved up the runner and when the throw went off the glove of Peter Ciofrone at first for an error, Valentin was aboard and Falu raced to third. An intentional walk to Ed Lucas loaded the bases for Damaso Espino. The Wizards had the infield and outfield in, but Espino delivered a ground ball that went off the glove of a diving Sean Kazmar at second and into center for the game-winner. The Bees won for the 12th time in their final at-bat this year, improved to 6-2 in double-header games and 4-2 in extra innings. Stutes (0-1) suffered the loss. Blackwell (6-1) won his fifth consecutive decision going back to May 2nd and his second of the series.
In game one, the Wizards scored two runs in the top of the second against starter Patrick Green on a sacrifice fly by Baudilio Figueroa and an RBI double by Matt Bush. As the Wizards were batting, the wind picked up, the skies darkened, the temperature cooled, and then the rains came before the Bees could bat in the bottom of the second. After a two hour and eleven minute delay, play resumed and Rusty Brown tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer off of Chris Steinborn who replaced starter Luke Steidlmayer, who pitched just one inning because of the weather. Gabe DeHoyos took over for Green after the delay and allowed just one unearned run over four innings of work. The run was unearned and came in the top of the fifth to put the Wizards ahead 3-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Valentin walked. Lucas followed with a single to left-center and as Valentin went to third, Yordany Ramirez threw the ball from center all the way into the Bees dugout which allowed Valentin to score to tie the game and put Lucas at third. Mario Lisson followed with an RBI double to right, stole third, and scored on a single by Espino to cap a three-run inning that put the Bees ahead 5-3. DeHoyos (3-0) finished the sixth and Adam Rowe loaded the bases, but worked out of the seventh for his fourth save. Geivy Garcia (0-1) pitched the bottom of the fifth and sixth for the loss.
The Bees will look for their season-high fourth straight win later tonight at 7:00 against the Wizards again at Community Field. RH Patrick Hicklen (3-1, 3.32) will start for the Bees against LH Fabian Jimenez (4-5, 5.71) for the Wizards. The gates open at 6:00 for a Wendy's Family Night with $14 family admission and a bike giveaway from Louisa Communications. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
