Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (June 11, 2005) - Patrick Hicklen pitched a career-high 7.2 shutout innings and the offense came alive as the Burlington Bees (31-31) beat the Ft. Wayne Wizards (33-28) 8-3 tonight at Community Field. The Bees have won four straight games, their longest winning streak of the season. The team gets back to the .500 mark for the first time since April 17th when they were 5-5.

The Bees got going early against Wizards' starter Fabian Jimenez (4-6). Mario Lisson drove in Ed Lucas with a double off the right field wall in the bottom of the first and in the second, Irving Falu and Geraldo Valentin delivered RBI singles to extend the lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Lucas laced a one-out single and scored on a triple to deep right-center by Lisson. Kenard Springer pinch-hit for Damaso Espino and drove in Lisson with a sacrifice fly to center to extend the Bees' lead to 5-0. In the bottom of the sixth, Jimenez walked Derek Norman and Jared Ellis to start the inning. Falu moved the runners to second and third on a bunt and Valentin drove them both in with a double to deep left-center. Valentin's three RBI tied a season-high. Lucas capped the scoring with a double down the left field line to drive in Valentin with the Bees' eighth run. That knocked Jimenez out of the game. Jonathan Ellis came in to finish the sixth and worked a scoreless seventh. Matt Varner retired the Bees in the eighth.

Hicklen (4-1) retired the leadoff batter in every inning except the eighth and the first two batters in every inning except his last two. He came out of the game in the top of the eighth with two on and two outs after a walk to Colt Morton, his second walk of the inning. Yovany Damico took over and threw just one pitch and got Tom Vincent to flyout to end the inning. The Wizards spoiled the Bees shot at back-to-back shutouts in the ninth. Lachlan Dale led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by Matt Bush. After a lineout to center, Chris Kolkhorst, Brett Dowdy, and Peter Ciofrone hit consecutive singles to produce two runs and pull the Wizards to within 8-3. Damico ended the game by getting Morton to popout in foul territory and seal the win.

The Bees will try for their first series sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 against the Wizards. RH Kyle Crist (4-0, 1.61) will start for the Bees in place of an injured Matt Campbell. He'll oppose RH Mike Ekstrom (8-1, 2.31) for the Wizards. The gates open at 1:00 for a Louisa Communications Kids Day. Little Leaguers and Boy and Girl Scouts in uniform get in free, anyone who brings a church bulletin to the ticket window gets $2 off for each member of their family, and kids can run the bases after the game. The game will also be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40. Tomorrow afternoon is the Bees' final home game for the first half of the season.
