
All-Star Maestrales Joins Bees

Burlington, IA (June 11, 2005) - Infielder Pete Maestrales joins the Burlington Bees today. Maestrales was just acquired on Wednesday when the Kansas City Royals sent Eli Marrero to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Maestrales and cash. Maestrales will fill the roster spot opened up yesterday when 1B Miguel Vega was placed on the disabled list.
Maestrales, 25, was playing with the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Orioles' Class-A affiliate in the South Atlantic League. He was leading the Shorebirds in hitting with a .303 average and had a team-high eight home runs while driving in 16. The switch-hitter has started at second base, third base, left field, and DH over the course of the season and was just announced as a South Atlantic League All-Star. Maestrales was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the San Francisco Giants in 2001 out of the University of Delaware. He split time between Salem-Keizer in the Northwest League and the Arizona Rookie League in 2001 and hit .273 with three home runs and 19 RBI in 60 games with Salem-Keizer in 2002. The Giants released him on March 29, 2003 and he played the last two seasons in the independent Atlantic League with Atlantic City and Newark. The Ft. Lauderdale, FL native signed with Orioles as a minor league free agent on March 12th this year. Maestrales also appeared for the Greek Olympic Baseball team in the Athens Olympics in 2004.
Maestrales will be in uniform, but not in the starting lineup, as the Bees go for their season-high fourth straight win against the Ft. Wayne Wizards tonight at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Patrick Hicklen (3-1, 3.12) will start for the Bees against LH Fabian Jimenez (4-5, 5.71) for the Wizards. Tonight is a Wendy's Family Night. Mom, Dad, and all the kids in your house get in for $14 and Louisa Communications will give away a bicycle. The gates open at 6:00 and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
