Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Gary SouthShore RailCats used a four run 7th inning to power past the Sioux City Explorers to earn their first win of the season and gain a 1-0 lead in the series. The X's (0-5) built a 3-2 lead but the RailCats (1-4) got doubles from Jeremy Hamilton and Jose Sermo in the 7th to leave with a 6-3 victory.

Charle Rosario (1-1) started poorly; giving RailCats fans flashbacks to the last series against St. Paul. After giving up a run in the 1st, he settled in and delivered a six inning, seven hit, and two earned run performance while earning the win for the Cats. Taylor Black earned the save by pitching a scoreless bottom of the 9th.

Graham Johnson started on the hill for Sioux City and pitched five innings giving up two runs. Nick Lomascolo entered the game in relief and got the loss, going 1.1 innings and giving up two runs.

The Explorers started hot with a leadoff double from Derrick Robinson. The RailCats' shaky defense reared its head again in an error by Hamilton and there were two on with nobody out. Michael Lang's single scored Robinson and the X's had a 1-0 lead with nobody out. Rosario then found his stride and retired the next three batters to prevent the big inning.

The RailCats struck next and claimed the lead with a two-run 2nd inning. Jose Gonzalez knocked in Hamilton with a single and Elbert Devarie sent Sermo home on a ground rule double. This was the first lead held by the RailCats after the 1stinning of a game in 2016.

The X's tied it up on a Rosario balk in the 3rd. A double and single combined with an error by the cutoff man Jarred Mederos in the 5th netted Sioux City another run and the 3-2 lead.

The clutch hitting that eluded the RailCats in the first four games of the season materialized in the 7th inning. Mederos led off with a single and Masato Fukae was hit by a pitch. Next, Brennan Metzger reached on a walk and loaded the bases. Hamilton, the cleanup hitter, then hit a line drive double down the line that cleared the bases and got the lead back for the Cats. Sermo hit another double in the next at bat and Hamilton came around to score making it 6-3.

The bullpen came in and worked the last three innings without allowing a run. A solid all-around performance by the team means the RailCats and their fans on the SouthShore were finally able to celebrate a win in 2016.

The RailCats and Saints battle again on Tuesday, May 24th at 11:00 for game two of the four game series. You can catch the action starting with the Mansard's Pre-Game Show at 10:50 on 95.9 WEFM and online at http://www.americanassociationbaseball.tv/events.
