Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The Gary SouthShore RailCats scored a season-high 10 runs on 13 hits to win their second straight game against the Sioux City Explorers. The X's (0-6) walked 11 RailCats (2-4) batters and committed one error in a sloppy performance in front of 3,011 fans on Kid's Day.
The RailCats had another stellar performance from their bullpen and a good-enough start from newcomer Richard Castillo to hold the X's to just four runs. Castillo, who was picked up just two days ago when catcher Jaime Del Valle went on the DL, went 4.2 innings giving up four runs on eight hits. Santiago Rodriguez picked up the win in his second performance as a RailCat. Sioux City starter Ryan Zimmerman, last year's American Association ERA leader, was roughed up early and only made it 3.0 innings while surrendering seven runs.
The RailCats continued to reverse the scary trends started from the series against St. Paul. For the first time this season, Gary SouthShore did not commit an error. The RailCats also had clutch hitting, and a lot of it. Their 13 hits were the most of the season for the Cats.
The run production started early as the RailCats scored before the first out of the game was recorded. Cameron Newell led off the game with a single, Alex Crosby reached on a walk, and Brennan Metzger's single knocked Newell home. One batter later, Jose Sermo's single scored Crosby and Metzger making the score 3-0 before Sioux City even stepped to the plate.
The X's got one back in the bottom of the 1st after a Derrick Robinson triple and Noah Perio sacrifice fly. For the second day in a row, though, the RailCats starter was able to prevent the big inning early in the game.
Newell once again led off an inning with a hit, this time a double in the 2nd. He moved over to third base on a Crosby groundout and scored on a Metzger sacrifice fly. The RailCats led 4-1 after the 2nd.
The RailCats expanded their lead and forced the X's to go to their bullpen in the 4th inning. Newell led off the inning again and reached on a walk. Another walk followed by an error on Zimmerman and Newell scored his third run of the game. The damage continued in the inning with the Cats scratching four more runs across on two singles and two fielder's choice groundouts.
Sioux City got some runs back in the 5th on a Perio three-run home run. That shot ended Castillo's day and drew the score to 9-4.
The RailCats got an insurance run in the next half inning by capitalizing on Sioux City mistakes. X pitcher Michael Pereslucha hit Tillman Pugh with a pitch to start off the 6th and Jose Gonzalez singled in the next at bat. Elbert Devarie reached on a walk and Jarred Mederos' sacrifice fly scored the final run of the ball game.
Alex Gunn and John Kovalik each pitched scoreless innings to round out the game and drop the bullpen's ERA to 2.80.
Newell starred for the Cats on the offensive side, going 4-5 with a walk and scoring three runs. Brennan Metzger, Jose Sermo, and Jarred Mederos each recorded multi-RBI games.
The RailCats go for their third straight victory and the series win tomorrow in Sioux City. Coverage starts with the Mansard's Pre-Game Show at 6:38 PM on 95.9 WEFM and online at http://www.americanassociationbaseball.tv/events. First pitch is at 7:00.
