Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries opened up a three-game series against the St. Paul Saints on Monday night, looking to improve to 5-0 for the first time in franchise history. The Birds' received a strong pitching performance from RHP Stephen Bougher, and some timely hitting from infielder Blake Schmit to secure the 3-2 win in front of 1,822 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Bougher (1-0, 1.35 ERA) went 6 2/3 innings for the Birds', allowing one run on three hits, while striking out two batters in his first start of the season. The Papillion, NE native retired the first six batters of the game before issuing a leadoff walk to Saints infielder Mike Gilmartin. Alonzo Harris would also reach base on a two-out error, but Bougher worked out of the jam, forcing Breland Almandova to fly out, ending the inning.
The Saints were held scoreless until the seventh, when Willie Argo smashed a lead-off double to the gap in left field, later scoring on a Nate Hanson RBI sac-fly. St. Paul pieced together one final threat in the top of the ninth when Argo reached base on a one-out walk, later scoring on a Hanson RBI double. Closer Chase Johnson worked his way around the threat, striking out Tony Thomas to end the game, and pick up his second save of the season.
Blake Schmit continued his stellar start to the 2016 season, going 2-for-4 with a homerun (1) and two RBI. The Edina, MN native is batting .533 over his first five games in a Canaries uniform, adding two stolen bases and five runs scored to his impressive offensive totals.
Chris Grayson also had a good night for the Birds', going 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and a run scored.
The Canaries enter Tuesday night's game against the Saints as the only undefeated team left in the American Association in 2016. The Birds' 5-0 record marks their best start in franchise history, surpassing the 2010 team who started the year 4-0 before losing their first game. That team finished the year with 63 wins, the most in the American Association, and earned a trip to the Championship series before losing to the Shreveport Captains in the title game.
LHP Misael Siverio (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his second start of the year against Saints RHP Mark Hamberger. Tuesday night will be "Two-For-Two Tuesday" at the Birdcage. Fans will have the opportunity to buy 2 tickets and get a second pair of tickets absolutely FREE!
