HRS SINK WINGNUTS SUNDAY

Wichita gave up four home runs to Lincoln Sunday afternoon as the Saltdogs claimed the weekend set with a 9-6 win at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. For the fourth game in a row the visitors scored first, plating four runs in the opening inning. The Wingnuts pulled one back in the second when Richard Prigatano launched Wichita's first home run of the season, before Lincoln's onslaught of long balls began in the fourth. Christian Ibarra was the first to go deep, hitting a two-run shot. In the fifth, Curt Smith and Jon Smith each hit solo homers, before Pat Kelly hit a solo shot of his own in the sixth make it 8-1 Lincoln. The Wingnuts drew within five in the eighth, as Brennen Salgado came off the bench to deliver a two-run double for his first hit as a pro. After the Saltdogs added another in the ninth to make it 9-3, Wichita made things interesting in the home half. Prigatano added two more RBIs to his total with a single, and Salgado followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 9-6. The Wingnuts brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Jeff McKenzie closed the door on the Wichita comeback attempt.

NEW GUYS COME THROUGH

12 of the 23 players on the Wingnuts Opening Day roster had suited up for Wichita prior to this season, but several new guys have already been major contributors, especially offensively. On Sunday, the two new guys that shined were Richard Prigatano and Brennen Salgado. Prigatano hit his first pro homer and first Wichita long ball of 2016 in the second, and totaled three RBIs, a new career-high. Salgado came off the bench to make his professional debut, picking up a two-run double for his first career hit. The rookie added a third RBI later on a sacrifice fly.

TIME TO HIT THE ROAD

After a four-game season-opening homestand at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, the Wingnuts begin their first road trip tonight with the opener of a three-game series against division rival Joplin at Joe Becker Stadium. Wichita was 28-21 on the road last year, the third-best road record in the American Association. The second leg of the Wingnuts trip will take them to Fargo for three, for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks first home series of the young season.
