December 20, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins played a trio of weekend games, taking two of three and recording four of a possible six points in the standings. An exciting 3-2 Friday victory over Bridgeport saw the P-Bruins strike for three goals in 2:04 late in the third for their only victory of the year when trailing entering the final period. Saturday's 7-1 loss in Lehigh Valley was their worst defeat of the season as they allowed a season high in goals, but the team responded at home the following afternoon with a 3-1 victory over the North Division leading Syracuse Crunch.
Their win Sunday pushes their season total to 35 points, good for fourth in the Atlantic Division but only six behind league-leading Wilkes-Barre Scranton. The win also pushed their home winning streak to six games, the second longest such streak in the AHL this year. The team's 13 game point streak was snapped in their loss to Lehigh Valley, however it stands as the longest streak in the AHL this year. The P-Bruins were 9-0-2-2 with 22 points during their streak which lasted from November 18 to December 17.
Zane McIntyre earned both wins in net for the Bruins and now sits as the top goalie in the AHL. The 24-year old leads the AHL in both GAA (1.31) and save percentage (95.3%). Frank Vatrano, making his season debut after being sent to Providence Friday, and Peter Cehlarik each scored two goals this week to lead the club. Cehlarik now sits at 13 goals for the season, a mark that leads the team as well as all AHL rookies. Alex Grant didn't tally a goal, but his three assists made him the high scorer of the weekend. Wayne Simpson remains the team leader in points (21) despite not registering one over the weekend.
The roster once again saw shake up as nearly every day another move was made. Matt Grzelcyk earned his first NHL call-up on December 14, playing in two games before being sent back to Providence Saturday. The following day the team recalled Anton Blidh for his second NHL stint of the season and sent Danton Heinen back to the AHL. Vatrano played two games for Providence after being added Friday afternoon but was called up to Boston Monday morning. Veterans Peter Mueller and Matt Bartkowski, who were playing under Professional Tryout Agreements, were each given season-long AHL contracts after solid starts to their season.
Providence kicks off a five-game road trip Wednesday when the team travels to Utica for a 7 pm game with the Comets. That will be their only game of the Holiday week, though they will be very busy with four games in six nights to end the calendar year.
