Amerks Home Win Streak Snapped in 4-1 Loss to B-Sens
December 20, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
Rochester, NY- The Rochester Americans (11-17-0-1) bid for their fourth straight win on home ice was denied after dropping a 4-1 decision to the intrastate rival Binghamton Senators (10-15-2-1) in the team's final matchup prior to the Christmas break Monday at The Blue Cross Arena.
For the second straight contest, Justin Bailey led the Amerks as the second-year forward chipped in with his 10th goal of the season during the first period. Cal O'Reilly and Casey Nelson each recorded an assist on the marker. Linus Ullmark made 27 saves in the defeat.
The Senators were led by Chris Rumble (2+0) and former Amerk Jason Akeson (0+2) with multi-point performances while Matt O'Connor improved his record to 7-9-1 after stopping 26 of the 27 shots he faced.
After Bailey opened the scoring on the night at the 9:07 mark of the first frame, the Senators answered less than 60 seconds later to even the score at one. Despite outshooting Binghamton 14-8 throughout the first period, the Amerks trailed 2-1 lead after Paul netted his third of the season with 1:56 remaining to give the Sens the lead for good.
"We had a strong first period despite trailing 2-1," said Bailey. "We came out and played our game but over the last two periods we got away from the things that made us successful for whatever reason, and against a team like Binghamton, they do not give their opponents much room and it came back to bite us tonight."
"I thought we were good early during the opening period," said Amerks head coach Dan Lambert. "We had chances over the course of the frame to get a lead but we unfortunately did not. Binghamton, on the other hand, had a few chances during the first 20 minutes, and they were able to capitalize and ultimately it was the difference marker."
Neither team could generate any goals during the second period, however, the Amerks deficit expanded to a pair midway through the final stanza after Rumble lit the lamp with 7:50 left in regulation as he made the score 3-1. Less than three minutes later, Binghamton capped off the scoring on the night on a goal from Rodewald.
The Amerks get back to work following the annual Christmas break on Monday, Dec. 26 when they host Syracuse Crunch in the third of their season-long five-game homestand at The Blue Cross Arena. The North Division contest is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start and all of the action will be carried live on The Sports Leader 95.7 FM/950 AM ESPN Rochester.
