P-Bruins Sink Sharks, 3-2 in Shootout

Providence, R.I. - The Providence Bruins defeated the Worcester Sharks in a shootout by a final score of 3-2 tonight at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins received regulation goals from Alexander Khokhlachev, Craig Cunningham while Khokhlachev, Seth Griffith, and Nick Johnson scored in the shootout. Niklas Svedberg made 23 saves.

In the first period, the P-Bruins came out to a strong start gaining momentum off some great scoring chances. However the Sharks struck first at the 6:42 mark when Konrad Albetshauser scored just beyond the goal crease. The puck sailed past Svedberg for the defenseman's sixth goal this season with the assists going to teammates Matt Tennyson and Travis Oleksuk. The Sharks found their game after that goal creating more quality scoring opportunities. Svedberg, however, remained strong in net to keep the P-Bruins from going into the first intermission down two goals. The lone goal scored in the opening frame gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

In the second period, the P-Bruins once again came out to a strong start. Similar to the first, however, the Sharks got the 2-0 lead on the power play at the 8:55 mark. A wrist shot by Eriah Hayes sailed past Svedberg for his 10th goal on the season. The assists were awarded to Oleksuk and Tennyson. The P-Bruins answered the bell at the 15:37 mark of the middle frame. Justin Florek took a wrist shot that sailed towards the five-hole of Sharks' net-minder Harri Sateri.

Khokhlachev was able to slip the puck past the goal line for his 20th goal this season. The second assist was awarded to Joe Morrow. The P-Bruins went into the second intermission trailing the Sharks, 2-1. In the third period, both the P-Bruins and Sharks managed to gain some great scoring opportunities. Svedberg and Sateri were forced to make some athletic saves with both teams getting hard shots off. The P-Bruins hard work would pay off when they scored the tying goal at the 18:51 mark. Ryan Spooner took a wrist shot towards the center of the Sharks' net.

Cunningham capitalized on the loose puck slipping it past Sateri for his 25th goal of the season. The second assist was rewarded to Matt Fraser. The game headed into overtime tied at 2 apiece.

After a scoreless overtime, the P-Bruins and Sharks were forced to decide the game in a shootout. With the decisive two points on the line it was crucial for the P-Bruins to get a victory in their hunt for a spot in the playoffs. The P-Bruins managed to earn the victory after a five round shootout. Ryan Carpenter and Eriah Hayes scored for the Sharks. The P-Bruins scored three goals in a row with the first two coming from Khokhlachev and Seth Griffith. Nick Johnson scored the game-winner in the final round with a slick wrist shot. The final score in favor of the P-Bruins was 3-2, shootout.

The P-Bruins went 0-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. Svedberg blocked 23 of 25 shots while the Sharks' Sateri made 32 saves. The P-Bruins will go on the road Saturday for a game against the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7:00 p.m. Join the P-Bruins for a road game party at Murphy's Deli and Pub tomorrow night in downtown Providence.

Fans will be able to enjoy the away game on the big screen and dinner will be served all night. The P-Bruins will return home this Sunday when they face the Portland Pirates at 3:05 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
