Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins used goals from Bobby Farnham, Chuck Kobasew and Dominik Uher, as well as a 17-save effort from Peter Mannino, to post a 3-0 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
It was the third shutout for the reigning AHL goaltender of the month, and Mannino's eighth win in his last 11 decisions (8-2-0-1). The Penguins netminder hasn't allowed more than two goals in any of those games.
The Penguins won their third straight game, improved to 39-22-3-5 on the season, and moved into a tie atop the East Division with the Binghamton Senators. The BSens, who have a game in hand on the Pens, dropped a 4-3 decision to the Rochester Americans on Friday. Binghamton and Wilkes-Barre will face off this Sunday afternoon in Broome County.
The Sound Tigers fell to 27-35-2-5 for the year, and saw their winless streak reach seven games (0-6-0-1).
Wilkes-Barre controlled the first period of play, holding the Sound Tigers without a shot for more than 15 minutes, during which time they jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Bobby Farnham netted the opening tally at 10:13 after Sound Tigers goalie Kenny Reiter misplayed a puck behind his net, allowing Anton Zlobin to center a pass to the Pens' pest in front of a virtually empty net. The goal was the sixth of the year for Farnham, and his first career game-winning goal.
Chuck Kobasew extended the lead three minutes later by picking off a Jake Newton defensive zone pass and wristing a shot past Reiter. It was Kobasew's eighth goal in eight games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Kobasew showed some muscle later in the period, dropping the gloves with Chris Bruton after the Bridgeport winger leveled Barry Goers behind the Pens net.
Dominik Uher made the score 3-0 late in the second period, after picking up a loose puck on the far boards and streaking down the right side shorthanded. He tried to feed Harry Zolnierczyk breaking for the net, but the puck went off of the Bridgeport netminder and found its way back to Uher, who tapped home his third shorty of the season, tied for second in the AHL.
Mannino was solid once again, picking up his third consecutive win and ninth on the season.
The Penguins continue their April schedule on Saturday night at home when they host the Albany Devils, who sit four points behind Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the Eastern Conference standings.
