P-Bruins open up playoffs on Thursday

The Providence Bruins will open up the 2004 Calder Cup Playoffs at the Dunkin' Donuts Center when they host the Portland Pirates on Thursday, April 15 at 7:05 p.m. The teams will vie in the first-round best-of-three series, with the winner moving on to face the Hartford Wolf Pack in the best-of-seven Atlantic Division Semifinals. Game 2 will be played in Providence on Friday, April 16 at 7:05 p.m. Should a deciding Game 3 be necessary, it would also be played in Providence, on Sunday, April 18 at 4:05 p.m.

The Bruins, who are in the post-season for the 10th time in their 12-year history, were 4-4-2-0 against Portland in the teams' 10-game season series. On home ice, the Black and Gold was 4-1-0-0. This series marks the second time that the long-time rivals have met in the playoffs. The Bruins won Game 7 in Portland, 6-3, in the 1995 Northern Division Semifinals, ending the Pirates' bid to repeat as Calder Cup champions.

BRUINS: C Brad Boyes finished sixth in AHL scoring with 31-41-72 totals in 78 games and was named an AHL Second-Team All-Star...G Tim Thomas ranked third among AHL goaltenders with a 1.84 GAA and second with a .941 save percentage...He also tied for third with a franchise single-season record nine shutouts...D Rich Brennan ranked fourth among AHL defensemen with eight power play goals and tied for second with four game-winning goals...The Bruins ranked sixth in the AHL with a franchise single-season record 170 goals against...They were one of six teams to break the AHL single-season record for fewest goals against in one season (176; Rochester Americans, 1998-99).

PORTLAND: LW Colin Forbes led the team with 16-32-48 totals in 69 games...G Maxime Ouellet finished eighth in the AHL with a 1.99 GAA and ranked second with 10 shutouts...G Rastislav Stana was 14-5-4 with a 1.68 GAA and .941 save percentage...D Shaone Morrisonn began the season with the P-Bruins...He was acquired by the Washington Capitals from the Boston Bruins in exchange for former Pirate D Sergei Gonchar on March 3...Portland ranked third in the AHL with 160 goals against.
