Michael Leighton stopped 31 shots for the Norfolk Admirals to register his second 3-0 shutout over the Binghamton Senators in the last six days as the Admirals grabbed a one game to none lead in the East Division qualifying series.
Norfolk now needs just one more win in the best-of-3 series to advance to the East Division semifinals for a date with the division champion Philadelphia Phantoms.
The first period looked to go scoreless heading into the first intermission, but a Johnathan Aitken left wing drive was directed past Ray Emery (33 saves) by Quintin Laing for a 1-0 lead at 18:47.
Despite the goal, Emery was outstanding in the opening period in making 19 saves to keep the Sens in the game early on.
Binghamton was energized in the first period by the return of winger Josh Langfeld, on recall with Ottawa since January 29th, but was denied on 13 shots fired on goal in the opening period.
The Admirals doubled their lead late in the second period on a rush that appeared to materialize on an offside rush.
Carsen Germyn looked to have preceded the puck into the Binghamton zone as play was allowed to continue. Brandin Cote beat Emery with a 45-footer from the right circle at the 16:41 of the middle period to make it 2-0.
Leighton faced three of the Senators' seven power plays in the final period, including 1:13 of 5-on-3 time, but was impenetrable during that sequence and perfect on all 12 shots in the third period.
Laing notched his second goal of the game, a late power play marker, with twenty-seven seconds left in the game for the final margin.
Norfolk outshot Binghamton 35-31 and converted one of five power plays.
The Sens face elimination from the playoffs unless they post a win in Game #2 of the series coming up Friday in Binghamton beginning at 7:05. A Binghamton win Friday would force a deciding third game Saturday, also at 7:05 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
