AHL quick hits
Published on April 14, 2004 under American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
The AHL's 68th postseason kicks off at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena tonight (7:05 ET) as Binghamton hosts Norfolk in Game 1 of the East Division qualifying series. The Senators secured their playoff invite on Saturday night with a 2-2 tie against Rochester, while the Admirals squeaked in on Sunday evening after Hershey dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Philadelphia.
These teams met three times over the final 10 days of the regular season, most recently a 3-0 Norfolk win on Apr. 9 in which Michael Leighton made 44 saves for the shutout... Two-time AHL All-Star Ray Emery stopped 40 of 41 shots in that loss for the Senators... The Admirals owned a 5-3-0-0 edge in the season series, including a split of four meetings at the Arena... Ads defenseman Burke Henry played for Binghamton coaches John Paddock and Mike Busniuk on Hartford's 2000 Calder Cup-winning team... Both of these teams had their 2003 playoff runs ended by eventual Calder Cup finalists (Norfolk by Houston, Binghamton by Hamilton)... The B-Sens were 6-1 on home ice in last year's postseason... Norfolk ranked 25th in the league averaging 2.15 goals per game in the regular season, but scored 26 goals in eight games against Binghamton (3.25 avg.).
