P-Bruins Drop Home Opener to Icecaps

- The Providence Bruins fell to the St. John's IceCaps 4-1 in their season opener Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins lone goal came from Max Sauvé

St. John's early offensive rush froze the Providence defense and goaltender Anton Khudobin, and the IceCaps got on the board just 1:15 into the opening frame. Defenseman Mark Flood's shot found a way through the P-Bruins' slot and past Khudobin for the first goal in the club's history.

However, Providence answered just over three minutes later with its own display of offensive skill. Sauv

é beat an IceCaps defender with a toe drag, opening up the right lane for a clear shot at David Aebischer. Sauvé got the crowd on its feet when he rang a wrist shot under the cross bar to tie the game at one at 4:10. Jamie Arniel and Carter Camper got the helpers on the play. The P-Bruins forwards continued to press the IceCaps, testing Aebischer and causing turnovers in St. John's zone. Despite opportunities from Trent Whitfield and Ryan Button, the P-Bruins couldn't find the back of the net, sending the teams into the locker room tied 1-1.

The IceCaps took control in the second frame scoring two unanswered goals. Paul Postma got on the board at 9:49 to give the IceCaps the lead. St. John's padded their lead just over two minutes later when Carl Klingberg deflected a shot from the point past Khudobin. Providence was unable to capitalize on offensive opportunities and went into the final frame trailing by two.

The IceCaps opened the scoring early in the third period when a fluke goal snuck by a sprawling Khudobin at 1:46. Jason Jaffray was credited with the shorthanded goal. In the offensive end, Sauv

é continued to dangle the St. John's blue liners, but was unable to find the back of the net. Tempers began to rise midway through the frame, with players exchanging words and shoves after the whistle. The IceCaps continued to crash the net, but Khudobin was strong between the pipes and kept St. John's off the board. Whitfield and Craig Cunnigham made a last ditch effort with a minute to play, but were unable to find the back of the net and the IceCaps went on to win 4-1.

Khudobin saved 27 of 31 attempts in the loss, while Aebischer blocked 21 of Providence attempts for the win. The P-Bruins went 0-for-4 on the power play and St. John's went 0-for-3 and tallied one shorthanded goal.

The P-Bruins are back in action at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday in a 4:05 tilt with the Worcester Sharks.
