P-Bruins Defeat Monarchs 4-3

Manchester, NH -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Manchester Monarchs 4-3 this evening at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Ryan Spooner tallied the first goal while Jordan Caron sealed the win with a hat trick.

After suffering a disappointing 3-1 loss to Manchester last Friday on their Opening Night, Providence traveled to Manchester this evening ready to turn the tables. Right from the opening face off Providence dominated every aspect of the game, so it was no surprise that Spooner got the P-Bruins on the board just 4:55 into the first frame, tallying his first goal of the season. Jamie Tardif assisted on the power play goal that gave the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, Caron unleashed his fury and tallied his first goal of the season, an unassisted goal, after he singlehandedly danced around Manchester's defense. Caron added his second of the night at 16:17. Boston University alums David Warsofsky and Chris Bourque assisted on the power play goal. The assist marked Bourque's first point in a P-Bruins sweater. The P-Bruins went into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.

The Monarchs came out flying for the second period after a lackluster performance in the first. Manchester got on the board just 33 seconds into the second frame to shrink the deficit to two goals. Richard Clune got lucky at 4:47 when his shot from behind Providence's net deflected off of Niklas Svedberg and in to bring the Monarchs within one goal. However, Manchester's momentum couldn't match that of Caron, as the forward added his third goal and first hat trick of the season at 8:34 on the power play. P-Bruins' centerman Carter Camper assisted on the goal to give the P-Bruins a 4-2 lead. The P-Bruins kept on following their shots and finishing their hits as they continued to control the game. However, a high-sticking call cost them a power play goal at 18:53. Despite the late goal, the club still went into the final intermission with a 4-3 lead over the Monarchs.

Play was more even keeled throughout the third period. Both teams had scoring opportunities, but solid goaltending from Svedberg and the Monarchs' Martin Jones kept both teams off the board throughout the frame. Manchester pulled Martin for the extra skater with just over a minute to go and nearly tied the game, but were denied by the post. The P-Bruins held on for the 4-3 win, their first victory of the 2012-13 season.

Svedberg's 30 saves earned him the win, his first career win and start as a P-Bruin. Jones' 13 saves fell short as he suffered the loss. Providence went 3-for-4 on the power play and 5-of-6 on the penalty kill.

Providence will travel to Springfield tomorrow to close out the weekend in a 7:00 p.m. tilt with the Falcons. The P-Bruins return to The Dunk on Friday, October 26 in a 7:05 p.m. matchup with Springfield for the 3rd Annual Pink in the Rink Night.
